Guest guest
ACLS is not required of us at this point. We recover our C/S all the time, and had to take EKG and PACU courses also. We do not do tubals on our unit, they are done in the main OR. The other large hospital system in town makes ACLS mandatory. They do 9,000 del a year. lori

Guest guest
We do our own C/sections so that is why we have to have ACLS. We do all our own recovery too. This is my third time taking it. It is so stressful to do but I am glad to be prepared and more confident in managing an emergency. Thanks for answering my questions. I was just curious to what others are doing in other areas of the country! teri
Guest guest
Hi, I work in a Level III in No. Calif. We do all our own C/S and we are definitely required to have ACLS. I agree with , why the BLS???? Barbra
Guest guest
Teri, I work at a Level III SRMC unit. Our department will not pay for its nurses to become certified in ACLS. They claim it is not a requirement. Although, all nurses are circulators and RR nurses---we staff our own OR.---This does not make any sense to me. They will also not pay for us to become telemetry certified; eventhough, post-operatively our pts are on cardiac monitors. They gave use a one time 8 hr class. Guest guest
Part of the reason for this discrepancy in requirements is due to interpretation of JCAHO requirements. They state that the same level of care must be available to all PACU patients regardless of what unit their surgery is on. Many interpret that if ACLS is required for the main PACU, then OB should do it to. Others feel because they have a code team with a quick response time that it fulfills the requirements. IMHO we can make OB nurses take ACLS until the cows come home, they will not be competent to run a code though. I see it as being no different than making ER nurses to be certified in EFM, they may take the class but you probably wouldn't want them to interpret your strip.
