Guest guest
If yiur daughter wants more children, she could have a myomectomy and just remove the fibroid rather than the whole uterus. Although the only guarantee of no more fibroids is to have a hysterectomy, a substantial number of women - may be 50% - depending on their age , number of fibroids, etc will benefit substantially from a myomectomy and never need another surgery for fibroids. Guest guest
Dear Barbara, The fact that new fibroids might develop is no reason to have to take out the uterus when removing a fibroid. If your daughter has any desire to have more children, I would definitely recommend a second opinion. It is certainly possible that your daughter's fibroid is so large and/or positioned in the womb in such a way as to make myomectomy (removal of the fibroid only) difficult or impossible. However, she should have an evaluation with someone who has experience with fibroid excision and uterine reconstruction, as if for a uterine anomaly. Then you both could be more assured of a good faith effort to preserve her fertility. If your daughter and her spouse do not believe they are called to have more children, or the fibroid and the problems it is causing cannot be dealt with in any other way, then hysterectomy is certainly a morally acceptable choice.
