MRI Dangers

Hi Kat,

I've never heard of any danger from an MRI, there is no radiation

involved with this. I and many of my family members have had MRIs

without any effects whatsoever. How rare for today's medicine!

I had even run into some speculation, an article perhaps, that there

might even be some benefit from the magnetism with this test. However,

this was only one article, and I've never seen any other follow up on

that.

Rest easy on this one!

It is the dye in the MRI that is the problem.

I didn't realize that an MRI can be done with and without contrast! I

knew that was part of some catscans, and many people were sensitive to

the dye--including my daughter who has terrible reactions to it.

Now I'm mixing myself up as I've had one of each (an MRI and a catscan).

Whichever it was had to be done with and without contrast, so I do

remember the dye being injected, but it did not faze me at all.

Available somewhere on the net (good ol' google will help) is a

description of 2 different dyes that can be used. One is the problem

causer and of course is the commonly used form (less expensive, I'm

sure). So, if there's any worry about a reaction to the dye, the

'better' one can be specified (or demanded as the case may be!)

Anyway, if it's just a 'simple' MRI------without contrast------there

will be no problem. If claustrophobia might be a feature, make sure that

the MRI is done at a newer facility that has the " open " machine.

Thanks, , for the " head's up " on this one

I've had many MRIs and no problem. I have also had several CAT scans. No

problem.

I found the magnetic action rather stimulating. I just wish they could make

the damn things quieter. My goodness they make a lot of noise ...

jackhammer like noise.

Of all the scans I have had I think only one involved contrast. Thankfully

I didn't have trouble with it.

Good luck!!

Kat:

Have the techie use the lowest MRI dose possible.

You may not have any problems NOW from so many MRI's and CAT scans, but the

less the better over the longevity of your life - the lower the dosage on

both - the better. You can't predict what may happen in the future from too

many scans and Xrays... Personally, I would NEVER have either... I'll have

no dental Xrays either (possible thyroid cancer inducer).

Amen to that, . CT scans are hazardous to one's health, according to Dr Wm

s and possibly Dr Mercola as well from what I have read. If I recall

correctly, each CT scan is equivilant to getting several hundred X-rays. Those

techs are in another shielded room for good reason.

I just called the MRI office and asked if they will be using the dye, and they

said his Dr. requested not to use it, so I'm happy about that. She went thru

what will happen, a full picture of his spine, which will take about 1 1/2to 2

hrs, the machine makes knocking noises, he can wear ear plugs if he wants, he

needs to stay still, etc. I was concerned about his immune system taking a hit,

because he doesn't have the best immunity.

Well, thanks you Sharon, & Jaxi for answering me. A bit of a load off my

shoulders.

This group really is terrific. Such a knowledgeable group of people. Witty too!

I concur that CAT scans are x-rays and therefore not necessarily the best

things in the world for you. However when you are in serious pain and no

one can figure out what the hell is going on you find yourself willing to

put yourself through many tests you might not otherwise tolerate or

consider. And I know things now I didn't know then, which might well have

led to different choices. Between dentists, sports injuries, car accidents,

kidney stones and gall bladder malfunctioning I have sadly had so many

x-rays and CAT scans in my life I probably should glow in the dark. But

done is done. I can only do the best I can to mitigate any past damage and

go forward.

MRIs however are a different beast. An MRI (or magnetic resonance imaging)

scan is a radiology technique that uses magnetism, radio waves, and a

computer to produce images of body structures. What evidence do we have

that MRIs might be harmful? There are numerous therapuetic magnet systems

available. There are no x-rays involved. I do not recall ever reading

about dangers associated with them like we do with x-ray procedures.

Hi Jaxi,

Didn't you say you've been dealing with chronic pain and swelling in your throat

and neck and also suffer from migraines and ulcerative colitis? Even if you

didn't feel anything noticable right after you had all those scans, have you

considered the possibility that they might very well have had some sort of

cumulative detrimental effect on your body over the course of time?

Here's a link to an article that addresses the potential dangers of cat scans:

Most of the chronic issues were in existence and causing their issues long

before the MRIs and CAT scans.

In fact most of the MRIs and CAT scans resulted due to those issues in the

effort to determine the cause of some of those issues.

But I am sure there has been a cumulative effect from the xrays from both

regular xray and the CAT scans.

As I said, done is done and we move forward.

That is one site written in a very sensationalized way. I have done google

searches on MRIs and the only thing that is consistently mentioned is

potential issues with the dye. They site one source but no research

articles. A healthy grain of salt with that link I think.

The MRI is like an atomic blast of intense fields that penetrate to the

deepest possible inth degree into every cell it is beamed on. There are good

fields and there are bad fields, I consider an MRI a very bad field. I had

one once. What I know about scoliosis from the lyme perspective, is that it

is microbes, usually. The ozone group or the rife groups would be helpful to

get more educated on this. I like DougPlus rife group and Jim Meissner has

great machines, as well as a silver maker at meissnerresearch.com

I guess it is good to get a diagnosis that way, but it is very invasive.

How I understand scoliosis, is that it starts in the neck. The atlas, which is

the first bone, right under the skull, then the cervical bones. If your atlas

is off kilter, which his is (4mm), then the spine tries to correct itself. Over

time, a curve is produced, because of this misalignment in the neck. This most

likely happened when he was born. But I have also seen info that it may be

caused by a virus in the spine. I belong to a Rife group, (Royal Rife?) but I

must admit, it is a bit over my head.

Hi,

I had a cat scan with contrast dye. I went home to have the worst migraine

headache I've ever had. It lasted about 5 minutes and then quit. It felt

like my head was going to explode and I couldn't hold my head up. Then it

hit me a second time and this time, I was trying to see the phone to call

for an ambulance, when it stopped again. I sat by the phone in case it came

back. It was duly reported and nothing was said by anyone but me. They

tried to get me back for a follow up using the same dye but when I called

them to ask about the dangers of the contrast dye and if they had something

less harmful, they acted quite calm about it and merely said, that was what

they used. End of discussion and no follow up for me, ever!

There are class action law suits over using contrast dyes so there must be

something bad about them.
