go with your instinct..........get her off of it. there are many options out there, talking to the pharmacist is always helpful. There is a files section in this group I will post for you of people's choices of alternatives. Please read the 3 different FDA adverse reactions as well...............

The sleeplessness is caused from it affecting their autonomic nervous system, this is a definite sign they are absorbing it. 4% is absorbed in a normal colon and it's made from a derivitive of anti-freeze which is a solvent....................these poor children

Hello everyone - this is my first time posting and I am so lost. I have a 16 month old little girl. She too started her issues when she was 12 months. I would laso like to add that she had really bad reflux at birth up to 7 months, not sure if there are any connections there. I am a first time mom but I 100% trust my mothering instinct on what is just not right. We tried stool softeners, supositories( ?), water, fruits, veggies you name it, until I had to freak out and tell my ped. that NOTHING was working. She then told us to go the mirilax, by this time my daughter was 13 months and I know what the label says but I took her advise as legit medical advise. Well - she never told us how much to give...play with the dose. I could and still can't find a dose that works. She is either too runny or it is very large and firm. At her 15 month visit our ped. said to give her a FULL cap a day. I don't know

if I was so stunned or what but didn't actually react to it until I got home (and that is out of the norm for me) so I call and tell my concerns, fears etc. demand to be refered to a GI and she says they will tell me the exact same thing. This is so scary to me because I don't know what to do. If I stop the Mirilax she can't poop and then back to horrile pain. We also have issues with moodiness, awful sleeping routine, shaky when can't go potty, sweaty and I have always thought it was just the constipation but after finding this group it all makes sense - so after the ped. told me that the GI would be a waste I started my search, but am still not understanding what I can do to help my daughter. Do I go to the GI, Will they really tell me the same thing? I want to solve this, not relive or just cover it up. I will take any advise, suggestions etc. I would just appreciate the help. Sorry this is so

long!

I’m new to the group too, I’m

still learning so I don’t have any good info or history to share.  But

your experience with your doctor rings a little like mine.  Once I realized a

few months ago that what the doctor suggested (well, blew the issue off as) was

n’s ‘normal pattern’ just didn’t sit well with me.

It may very well have been his normal SOP from 12 months to 3½ years, but it

wasn’t right, something was wrong and needed to be addressed and fixed.  So,

against my nature, I kept pushing and questioning his diagnosis.  I just had to

– I was breaking down in tears at home b/c something was wrong with my

little boy (OK, granted I’m 4 months pregnant and a little nutso at this

point chasing around 2 kids, trying to work, dealing with aging dog issues and

feeling tired and terrible every day, but…).

So, keep going and stay with what your gut

instinct tells you is right/wrong.

Hi, I am new to the group myself and have already learned a GREAT

deal from everyone here. My daughter is now 23 months and she has

had bowel troubles on and off since 2 months old. She also had AR

and was taking Zantac until she was about a year old. My daughter is

the queen of fiber foods and veggies and fruits, and she gets plenty

of fluids, but she still just was not able to go. When she was less

than 9 months, it was a frequency problem. No hard stools, but she

would only go about every 7 days and usually we needed to give her

suppository. After she turned one, she would still have frequency

issues at times, but now it would cause her a great deal of pain and

she would sweat, scream, cry, hold on to me very tightly until she

finally went. The doctor recommended lactulose, which I took when I

was pregnant. It made me extremely gassy and I had literally

projectile vomiting. It is a very hard medication to take for some

people. So, I said no to that. Then he suggested one tsp of MOM a

day. She still wouldn't go for a week. Then the doctor said Miralax

and a full capful. Crazy. I also took this when I was pregnant and

found out I was allergic to it. I told the doctor and he

said " That's the first time I have heard of that " , which is exactly

what my doctor said when I took it. So, we decided no Miralax.

What we have tried and just recently has been working (last two

weeks). We are on our third probiotic. One called Nature's Way for

children that we mix in her milk in the morning.

http://www.vitacost.com/Natures-Way-Primadophilus-Children-for-Ages-0-

5

Also, half a capsule of Culturelle in her milk (the other half goes

to her sister). 250mg (1 and 1/4 tsp) of unflavored Natural Calm in

her juice in the morning (magnesium citrate).

I don't want to jinx things here, but she has been going every day or

every other day for two weeks. And we haven't had to add in any MOM

to " get things going " during this time either.

I have thought about another visit to a GI (we went at 9 months old),

however, I don't want to be told that Miralax is our only option. We

also live in a pretty rural area, so good doctors are hard to find :(

I hope you find alot of help here as I have!

Thanks, I'll look into those in the files section. I have read about

the fatal disnaetremia caused by elective colonoscopy in some past

posts...how scary. The part that made me the most mad at my GI

doctor's office while I was pregnant was that the nurse asked me if I

was sure I didn't have athlete's foot when I told her my allergic

reaction (Which was small hives/bumps that were extremely itchy on my

foot. It actually woke me up at night. I had the same reaction when

I was allergic to codeine cough syrup so I knew what it was) Also, I

think it was the Miralax website that said that if you break out in a

rash or hives you are probably having an allergic reaction, so tell

your doctor. He didn't even know that or at least he acted like he

didn't.

We have a new pediatrician at the practice we go to and we saw him

last time we went in (instead of our other pediatrician). I told him

about the allergic reaction I had to Miralax and the concerns I had

about it and he seemed a bit more willing to listen than the other

pediatrician. He still said that " rare " cases of things happening to

children on Miralax have been reported, so he wasn't very supportive

there. However he was concerned about my allergic reaction and

didn't think my daughter should use it.

But I did have one. It was the exact same reaction I had to codeine

cough syrup. An itchy rash/hives that started with my feet. Once I

stopped the Miralax, the rash/hives went away.
