Guest guest
I must admit, Saudi Arabia is easily the safest country that I have ever been in - as far as personal safety is concerned. During Ramzaan, my working hours were 8:00AM to 12:00 noon, and then 8:00PM to 12:00 midnight. There were many times when I had hailed a cab after midnight and travelled home on my own. That is something I would never dare do in my own country - much as I love it. I do not think this was because of the Abaya - in any case I never wore it at work in the hospital - but because of the very real threat of capital punishment. Public beheading was a regular feature there - I never worked up the nerve to attend one, though - have you attended any, Shyam ? Be that as it may, after having travelled extensively ( South America is the only continent I haven't been to ), and having experienced many cultures first hand, I still very much prefer our own Bharat, with all its faults. I still get goosebumps when the Indian coastline / the Himalayas come into view (depending on where I am flying in from) - with a strong feeling of - " this is MY country " :-) !!! I am sure all of us feel that - in one way or the other - after all, this is where our roots are ! Guest guest
Well, Prabha, I would say that about our old USA too! I know a lot of you would say what about the ghetto areas....downtown etc? Yes those might not be the safest even during day time, but the suburbia is very safe. Many a times I have gone grocery shopping after 10.00 pm (although Ashok doesn't like that) without any hesitation. I have also travelled alone for conferences, boards etc to dfferent cities which I would shudder to do in apna Bharat. I was even scared to move from one Mumbai airport to other with my kids and luggage at night. I like that freedom and sense of security that I get here. Another plus is absence of eveteasing . Aisha has no concept of eve teasing as she is never exposed to that. I think that is the worst form of female of oppression and exploitation and that is one thing that makes me furious. Anyways I think that every place has its pluses and minuses and one should accept and adapt to their surroundings and make the best of it. After all life is short, ain't it? What say you guys?
