Guest guest
usually when they are trying to diagnose a problem they do a barium enema to rule out hershpruns and other possibilities, they should never prescribe Miralax unless they know there are no blockages but they do everyday..............just out of curiosity, was you or your child exposed to antibiotics while pregnant or in the first few weeks of life? Ususally vomiting is a sign of blockage, which in his case could be just stool but they usually do tests to find out if there's a problem.............have you ever tried a probiotic instead of a laxative, my girlfriend has lupus and was vomiting daily, it stopped completely when she started a probiotic. This may not be the case with your son, but it's worth a try, there's a reason he's so uncomfortable..................you definetely need a second opinion and please read the FDA adverse reaction sheets before giving miralax again.................... http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/miralax/files/ Jeanie Subject: What is the cause of this???To: miralax Date: Saturday, September 13, 2008, 9:49 AM My son is 7 and has been constipated since birth. Guest guest
Yes I was on anti-biotics during pregnancy. Zithromax twice from severe sinus infection and some type of sulfer drug for a UTI. My son also suffered from frequent ear infections as a baby and toddler then they finally put tubes in his ears. I am certainly going to request the barium x-ray from reading it sounds like this could rule several things out. I haven't ever tried probiotics I don't know much about it but i'm going to look into it. Is that a prescription? Guest guest
I also forgot to add that some of their testing for food allergies is not always correct, look into different ways of testing like entrolab. Pfeiffer Treatment Center does a complete look at bio-chemistry i.e. heavy metals, minerals. ie. elevated copper, zinc deficiency etc. he may be deficient in something or too much of another. enviromental chemicals can cause digestive symptoms as well, spraying pesticides in your home, lawn etc. http://www.hriptc.org/ https://www.enterolab.com/Home.htm--- Subject: What is the cause of this???To: miralax Date: Saturday, September 13, 2008, 9:49 AM My son is 7 and has been constipated since birth. Guest guest
No, probiotics is not a prescription. You can good ones at your local co-op, you can get excellent ones at www.kirkmanlabs.com. We use and are successful with the Probiotic Defense (helps with illnesses, too). The link is: http://www.kirkmanlabs.com/products/probiotics/pro_bio/Pro_BioDefence263.html or the Probiotic Gold... http://www.kirkmanlabs.com/products/probiotics/pro_bio/H_PROBIO_Gold_C_60_Spec042.html My ds does not take pills, so we open the capsules and sprinkle on his food. He asks for it everyday. Good luck to you!!! P.S. It doesn't work immediately - double the dose and keep giving it. It takes some time to kill the bad flora and build up the good. Guest guest
your health professional will order the proper tests that needs to be done, they usually test for parasites, and how the BM is breaking down short and long chain fatty acids etc. It is simply looking at stools for ph, and normalcy, from their they recommend certain things to correct, like candida or pseudanomas etc. they are looking for bad bacteria overgrowth etc. Trying a probiotic first is always a good thing and could save you lots of time and money.......... what do I think? you can't know until you test the stool................. Guest guest
It sounds as though the diarrhea while on lactulose is stemming from the fact that he was so backed up initially, that his colon is all stretched out internally (megacolon)...then he had the enema, which got the bulk of the stool out, and now, the lactulose is 'causing' diarrhea because the size of the colon is still so large. So really, the lactulose isn't 'causing' the diarrhea in that sense-- try backing down the dose of the lactulose, while still keeping some fiber sources in him, whether food sources like celery if he will eat it, or keep him on some type of fiber supplements. Whatever you had been using, or consider trying something different. Some fibers work better for people than others. There is also an expensive produce called juice with fibre (google it with that spelling) or it might be juice plus fibre. Either way, a crate of it is expensive, and yet, wow, the fiber that was in there really did a good job with my daughter. But it was hard to remember to get her to drink it every day. For now, we are doing an oxypowder regimen every weekend. Oxypowder is a magnesium supplement that helps move things through. It's been a few weeks but our regimen is like this: Friday after school, come home and take one capsule. Take another capsule the next day at lunch time. Take another capsule that evening as well. Take one more on Sunday, maybe morning or lunchtime. This makes the stool come out pretty loose on the weekend and then it comes out daily or every other day during the week, looking fairly normal. By Friday it is starting to look pellety again. But this is a whole lot better than a chemical substance like miralax, IMO. If anything the lactulose is certainly the lesser of two evils. My son had used lactulose no problems before miralax. After miralax, everything seemed messed up in his bowels. Anyway, with the lactulose, I would say back down, keep the fiber intake up, and keep water intake up. You should be able to find the happy medium. Look into getting him on probiotics as well... (think of those commercials for the yogurt lately that talk about probiotics...same idea). W > > My son is 7 and has been constipated since birth. Guest guest
has anyone ever seen problems with lactulose? My son is in more pain now than before. Friday he had 2tblsp then I had to drop it to 1tblsp on Saturday and Sunday. He hasn't had explosive watery BM's since Saturday morning. It's pebbles again and he was doubled over in pain and sweating last night until he had a small BM. I'm waiting for the GI to call me back I'm so nervous I want to cry with him. Guest guest
lactulose is a softener, though. i know the first couple of days we were on the lactulose my daughter had some cramps, but they went away. however, when we took more than 1/2 t a day (which is what we are on now - planning on cutting it out altogether), i would split her dose up - so, for example, would do 1/2 t in morning, and 1/2 t at night. seemed to help. so sorry he is having a hard time. i would for srue call the doc. dana sounds like he needs a stool softener, ask you pharmacist.........lactulose can cause gas pains, if they are pebbles, they must be hard. Guest guest
HELP QUICK! my son had an abdominalx-ray yesterday he is FULL of stool still. We had one done 4 weeks ago and he was FULL. We did MOM for 2 days then started miralax he vomited had severe cramps and went on an emotional rollercoaster (to name a few) we went to pediatric GI they gave him lactulose he again had severe cramps severe watery stool somewhere in between there they gave him an enema. AND HE IS STILL FULL!!!!!!!! The pediatric GI just told me I have two options give him FOUR CAPFULLS OF MIRALAX TODAY mixed with gatorade to clean him out or he has to go to the hospital and have a tube put up his nose and down into his intestines to get cleaned out. First of all what's the name of this procedure endoscopy? Do they ussually use that to clean someone out? I asked if I could use something different like MOM he told me it was like trying to shoot an elephant with a beebee gun and miralax is my only option. I am scrambling trying to find another opinion these things seem to take time but I don't have much time to work with.> > From: jesscloutier <jesscloutier@ ....>> Subject: What is the cause of this???> To: miralax@yahoogroups .com> Date: Saturday, September 13, 2008, 9:49 AM> > > > > > > My son is 7 and has been constipated since birth. Guest guest
We had the same problem with my son being extremely backed up via tests. We used a 2 prong approach - large doses of mag citrate to get it from the top end and 1 enema a day to get it from the bottom end. The GI had us start with 3 days, but we ended up having to do it for 5 days until he was having massive liquid blowouts and no more formed stool or rocks. Then we were able to back up on the mag dose and discontinue the enemas. It wasn't a fun time, but it did the job and we have managed his constipation ever since with magnesium citrate. I have also had good success with the enzyme No-Fenol to maintain soft but formed stools. What is the cause of this???To: miralax@yahoogroups .comDate: Saturday, September 13, 2008, 9:49 AM My son is 7 and has been constipated since birth. Guest guest
thanks so much we have just armed ourselves at the drug store and I discussed the approach with the GI he still tried to convince me to use miralax. I hope this gets us out of danger and no horrible procedures need to be done. Did you have an additional x-ray done to determine if your son was cleaned out? Had he been on laxatives before tests confirmed he was completely backed up? I got an appointment at the Boston Children's Hospital in Massachusetts for second opinion From: jesscloutier <jesscloutier@ yahoo.com>Subject: What is the cause of this???To: miralax@yahoogroups .comDate: Saturday, September 13, 2008, 9:49 AM My son is 7 and has been constipated since birth.
