Guest guest
Study: Statins May Help Keep Asthma Patients Out Of Hospital Asthma patients who take cholesterol-lowering statins in addition to common asthma treatments appear to have significantly fewer emergency-room visits and hospitalizations for the respiratory disease, according to a new study by Medco Health Solutions Inc. (MHS) and Harvard Medical School affiliate Brigham and Women's Hospital. Adult asthma patients on inhaled corticosteroids who also took statins - which include cholesterol drugs such as the generic simvastatin, Pfizer Inc.'s (PFE) Lipitor and AstraZeneca PLC's (AZN) Crestor - reduced their odds of hospitalization or an ER visit for asthma by 33%, according to Medco, a major pharmacy benefits manager. " This is the first large study of its kind. It does need to be replicated, so don't rush out and buy yourself a statin for your asthma today, " Epstein told Dow Newswires. For those asthma patients already taking a statin, the study provides another reason to stay compliant with their prescriptions, added Medco spokeswoman Ann . http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/djf500/200903140016DOWJONESDJONLINE\ 000002_FORTUNE5.htm Alana
