Hi Jan,

Yes, I certainly have lots of funny OB stories. As I'm trying out my luck as

a writer, since retirement, have completed one book (not yet published) and am

starting another. I have also thought of compiling my OB stories together for

an article I'm writing, titled, " Nursing can be Fun or It's a Baby " . If

anyone has any funny stories, without names, of course, I'd love to include

them in the article, giving you credit for each story like Chicken Soup for

the Soul books, if you want.

I correspond with a L & D nurse in GA and she writes me after she has an

especially harrowing day. She tells me that it helps to let off steam to

someone who understands. (I'm sure her family can't possibly understand what

a day in the life of a L & D nurse is like.

Good to be with you all.

Hi ,

Thank you for the warm welcome. Tell me something about yourself.

AJB and any of the new members. Again, welcome!

I live in West Texas. I transferred to an NICU in a 100 bed hospital about

one year ago. Prior to that I worked in L & D for about 17 years. I probably

still would be there except for the unreasonable call schedule. Meanwhile I

am learning a lot in NICU. But OB is still my love and I'm sure someday to go

back.

I am currently attending classes to finish my BSN and will probably will

continue to finish my masters.

I am married and have 2 teenage sons.

I really enjoy talking and listening to the members of this group. I hope you

do too.

, RNC (I just put the RNC to differentiate from the other in the

group. I have since found out she is an RNC too so maybe I should change it?)

You are so right Chreub. Sometimes after a particularly eventful day I forget

and start sharing my day with my husband and three sons (11,14,19) at dinner.

I'll look up and everybody at the table is green, and I say " What did I say? "

Good to have someone to share war stories with! Kathy H

Hi,

Yes, Kathy, we get so used to things around the department, that we can eat

near a place that they are cleaning up placentas. (We used to have to eat in

the back where the clean up was also done) If someone outside came in they

would amost barf. Then we'd laugh and realize how desensitized we were.

I guess it is good that we could get that way, or else we wouldn't be able to

do the work we do. I was once orientating a new girl to the department. She

asked me if she would have to work around places that had blood and I answered

in shere amazement, " Well sure you will " . She was gone in about 15 minutes

and never came back. The girls asked what had happened to the new employee.

When I told them, they all had a good laugh. It was well the girl left, but

I've often wondered where she ended up nursing. I'm sure it wasn't in a

hospital, as can't imagine ever getting away from seeing some blood in the

hospital setting. (She probably went into being a school nurse or something.)

Well enough of that. You all have a good day.

I guess it's like anyone's else's job. I can stand the thought of

craniotomies, so I applaud those who can help those people. When I started in

L & D the room where the autoclave was, was where the nurses smoked! And we

never wore gloves to circulate on deliveries, much less dress like a space

alien like nowadays. I know it is all a necessary evil, but it does seem

strange the way thing used to be

Sylvia, , and Darlene

Thanks for the words of encouragement!!! I think my main problem is that I'm

just scared of any job change. The idea of starting all over again as an

orientee does not exactly appeal to me. But all 3 of you have reminded me

why I wanted to be a nurse, and specifically a L & D nurse in the first place.

As a med/surg, and later a transplant nurse, I've been able to be a part of

the intimacy of a patients and the patients family's life during stressful

times, and sometimes during death. It was not always pleasant, but I always

considered it an honor. (I hope you can understand what I mean by that,

probably only another nurse could understand) But as a L & D nurse, I think

I've forgotten what an honor it could be to be a part of someone's life at

such a special time. And I think for the most part, it would be even more of

an honor, since this is usually such a special, happy time. Hopefully, my

concerns won't all be for nothing. Cross your fingers and say a prayer for

me, that I am actually OFFERED the job. I'll let you know!! Thanks again,

Debbie

Hi, everyone!

My name is , and I am currently working at NYU Medical Center in NYC. I

have been at the Medical Center for 7 years, but am new to OB (started in

January '99) I love my job, but due to a separation from my husband, i am in

Connecticut, staying with family (I have a 2 year old daughter). My commute

into NYC is 2 hours each way (I work 4p to 12 m.) I am on an LOA to start a

job search here in CT. Unfortunately, i have not been oriented to L & D yet.

Just PP and NBN. I'm hoping to be hired without L & D, as I have 5 years

med/surg and my MPH. Plus, my head nurse knows I intend to leave, so she has

cancelled my L & D orientation (I was supposed to start next month). If I

don't find a job within the next few weeks, I ask to stay on long enough for

L & D orientation, but, alas, I know I will meet resistance.

I am looking forward to " meeting " y'all here on the list.
