Hi Lynda,

I'm also in the UK. Was diagnosed 12 months ago with Hashimotos. I was wondering who prescribed you Armour. My GP will not prescribe it,

Hi Lynda,

Thanks for that. were you on thyroxine before and did you stop taking it completely before taking armour?

I am now on 125mg thyroxine and still don't feel right. Painful legs and burning under my feet are just two symptoms I'm left with.

Do you feel a great difference,

Regards,

Sandy

  • 2 years later...

So much of what has written about today applies to me. I would like to thank you for all the wisdom you impart.

I was first treated for despression and the thyroiditis came later, but who knows maybe it was there to start with. For a start I never had regular periods and when I did have one I used to vomit for 24 hours, I would end up dry heaving with nothing left on my stomach to bring up.

My depression was accompanied by extreme muscle pain and fatigue. I was treated with lithium - bad move, as I have learned since then.

After that, I was pretty much on my own with no treatment and although I did seem to recover for a few years it all came back with a vengeance 5 years ago.

I have now been on Armour for about 6 months and although I felt a little better I was still far from well. On Gracia's advice I decided to add cortef. However, because I had read that the adrenals should have been treated first, I thought it would be best if I stopped the Armour for a few weeks when I started the cortef. Well, after just one week of no Armour I was back to crying non stop again. So 8 days ago I began taking the Armour again (as well as cortef) and I feel so much better. At last I feel as though I am getting somewhere.

I had also been using progesterone cream for about a year and can honestly say that it made no difference at all, so I think and Gracia are right about the need to treat the adrenals first. I felt as though as was so estrogen dominant that the addition of pregesterone was simply not enough to counteract it. Now with the cortef I think there is more balance.

Jan, I also have neuropathic pain, intense burning pain in my feet but it does seem to be improving with the cortef.

Could be that the antidepressants helped uncover a more subtle problem in your husband, just enough to make it more obvious what it was.

Re: adrenal burn-out?

, that describes what happened to my husband - depression, and muscle pain. His thyroid always tested good, so he got tons of antidepressants, including lithium. Now his thyroid tested much worse, the depression and muscle pain are much worse, and he has fatigue, which he never used to have. I am giving him all the vitamins, including selenium, and gonna give him a bit of T3 to see if it helps.I am gonna start on deltacortil, and start him on it as well soon. I am 7-Keto (switched from DHEA) and just started him on it.My neuropathy is almost totally gone with the higher dosage of thyroid meds, but I still wanna take the deltacortil for the other adrenal symptoms I have.Jan

He has been off them for around 2 years. I think that what was

masking his problem was poor blood sugar control. As soon as he got

excellent control, around 1 year ago, he started getting depressed,

fatigued, the fibromyalgia came back with a vengeance... it is like

the higher blood sugars were keeping him with a bit of an

unnatural " high " , once that was gone, he felt much worse.

Hi Sandy,

Neither will mine! I just buy mine online and read up as much as I can, also follow the guidelines for dosage as given on various websites.

It is not the right thing to do but better than being sick through my docs incompetence. If I can help you with anything please let me know.

Hi Sandy,

yes I was taking 100mcg thyroxine but my doc took me off it as he did not agree that I had a thyroid problem (I had been prescribed that by Gordon Skinner) so I decided to go my own way. I also had that terrible burning in my feet but it did not go away with Armour alone. It was only when I added cortef that it helped with the burning pain. Still have some pain in my legs but it is getting better.

The other thing you can do is to buy T3 online - sometimes thyroxine doesn't dispel many of the symptoms because you don't efficiently convert the T4 to T3. I was on a high dose of thyroxine & have dropped it to 100mcg & substituted T3 for the rest. I do feel better overall & have more energy, I am also losing some of the ghastly amount of weight I put on before diagnosis & regulating the medication - I went from just under 8 stone (my usual weight since adult) to 12 1/2 stone.

My doctor claims not to understand T3 & has referred me to (apparently) a thyroid specialist. My appointment is in January. It remains to be seen whether or not he will prescribe T3 or Armour for me.
