Guest guest
Hi a Thanks for your very kind welcome. I have had both knees replaced one last year and the other the year before. I have had my right wrist fused. Left wrist joint replaced in 1998. Unfortunately 5 years later the joint came out as my bones had crumbled away around the new joint. So to cut a long story short I have had 3 ops on that wrist to pin it and put bone grafts in. . I have not long since had the 3rd op on my left wrist and I am still in a cast . I go on Wednesday to have the cast off. It will be 14 weeks I have had the cast on this time. I could do with some new ankles as well but dont think the success rate is very good for them. Anyway I dont think I want to see inside of another hospital for a long time ....lol What meds do you take a.? Love Joyce xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx a <a54@...> wrote: Welcome Joyce. Guest guest
Joyce, Why aren't you taking a dmard to treat your arthritis? I take naproxen too, but that only treats inflammation, it does nothing to stop the damage of RA. For pain I take vicodan. But the Enbrel has been the best for me as far as stopping the disease progression. My knees were a mess before I had them replaced. First I had arthroscopic surgery and they cleaned out the joint. A few years later I had open knee, which was botched and required another surgery 3 months later. Then a few years later my knee was so weak that it gave out on me and I broke my leg. It wouldn't set so they had to surgically implant pins and plates. Then when I was going to have my knee replaced, the pins and plates had to come out first so that the holes would heal. Three months after that surgery, I finally had it replaced. This was done in 1997 and is doing very well. I know I'll have to have something else done to it since replacements last about 10-15 years and I'm only 51 now and it is already 8 years old. My other knee had no prior surgeries. They tried, but I wouldn't let them. I just wanted it replaced! So you can see why I understand why you want to stay far away from OR! But I also know that I'd be in a wheelchair if it wasn't for my fantastic ortho doctor. I sure hope your doctor has plans on getting you started on a dmard. I have a website with the meds listed: http://rheumatoid.arthritis.freehosting.net/drugs.html So glad your wrist is looking good! a On Sep 18, 2005, at 7:49 AM, joyce madine wrote: > a > What happened with your knee surgery? > I am on Naproxen and co-dydromol. Guest guest
a That is reall nasty you having to go through all that. You poor thing.. It must have been awful for you when you broke your leg and had to have it pinned. I know what you mean though about having the surgery cos it is as you say we would be wheelchair bound if we didnt have it done. I have never heard of Dmard or Enebrel, I have tried several meds over the years and had no joy with them. They either done no good or I suffered to much with the side affects from them.. They even tried me on the old fashioned rememdy of gold injections but I just came out in a rash and ithched all over ...lol The only thing that helps when I am in a flare is the steroids. I can mostly get by with my co-dydromol painkillers they are quite strong and the naproxen. I am pleased you are getting relief with the meds you are on. take care Love Joyce a <a54@...> wrote: Joyce, Why aren't you taking a dmard to treat your arthritis? Guest guest
DMARD means disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs . The gold you were on is a DMARD. Dmard's treat the disease. I hope you checked out the medication page so that you can find out about the various treatments available. I hate to think of you loosing more joints to this nasty disease. Pain pills and anti-inflammatory drugs may control the pain, but your joints are still being eroded. Sometimes it takes a lot of trial and error to find the right one that has little or no side effects. Enbrel has been a miracle for me. I have NO side effects what so ever. But it is expensive so if you don't have a prescription plan, it may be difficult to get unless you qualify for assistance from the manufacturer. I've been on Enbrel since 1998. Do you see a rheumatologist? Yes, it was nasty going through it all, especially since my kids were 2 & 5 when I broke my leg. Talk about having to get creative!!!! Having this disease has made me a stronger person. We are all survivors. a On Sep 18, 2005, at 2:19 PM, joyce madine wrote: > a > That is reall nasty you having to go through all that. Guest guest
Hi a I have tried all of the DMARD drugs. My rheumy told me there was nothing more he could give me now. Yes you are right having RA certainly makes you a stronger person. It must have been really tough on you when you broke your leg with your children being so young. I think here in England we are well behind with all the new drugs for RA. take care Joyce a <a54@...> wrote: DMARD means disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs .
