I think that the cortisol tests are a little more complicated, as far as what they test for. A good adrenal doc will want to test for the cortisol, but also the DHEAs, possibly estrogens, testosterone, progesterone, and some of the other androgens. The blood test isn't that reliable, but, some will do the ACTH challenge test, if done appropriately. Adrenal exhaustion is something that is quite tricky. If they're completely shut down, of course, it's called 's, but that would be so obvious a diagnosis, but somewhere half in between is much harder to diagnose because we're still up walking around. I am getting these tests as soon as I can afford them (no insurance; I have to do this stuff a little at a time these days). One hormone can be down, indicating a possibility with another one not tested for, or another can be up, so to speak, indicating something else. It's all so tied to thyroid. I have read in many places that, if you're having difficulty going up on your thyroid hormone without getting hyper symptoms, even though you know darn well you're not actually hyper, that tired adrenals could be the problem and can even be the primary problem, instead of the secondary problem. With some of the emotional stressors that you've been through, it's just very possible.

P.S. BTW Happy New Year, and in case I haven't told you of late:

OINK!!!

Re: -adrenal problem?

Good Morning & Happy New Year ! Hey, feel free to interject anytime you want. Yeah, I've been nauseated in the mornings since at least 1990. I can remember for sure that far back. I'm sure it was longer than that because I stopped eating breakfast a LONG time ago because I felt nauseated.

My sugar level is typically low in the morning which is why, according to my doctor, I feel sick every morning. He said people with low blood pressure feel nauseated when their sugar level drops, making it difficult for them to eat. It's a catch 22 'cause ya need to eat something to stop the nausea.

I have noticed that since I started adding the lactose free milk to my coffee (I put in about 1/2 cup because I'm still trying to go completely off caffeine), then I start to feel a little hungry within a few hours. so I'll just nibble.

You're right; it could definitely be a sign of adrenal problems. I know you're not the only person who has mentioned this to me. My mom, who has thyroid problems, was treated for adrenal problems when I was a teenager.

I will see how I do with the Armour. If it doesn't resolve a lot of my thyroid symptoms then I press the issue with my endo for urine or saliva tests to check to see if I have an underlying adrenal problem.

They just tested me for Sjogren's, but I haven't heard anything from them. I could call or stop by the office but I really am more in the mood to wait until Feb. to see.

I was told that many times people with Sjogren's may have the disease, but oftentimes it's not until the latter stages of the disease that they test positive for it. The nurse practitioner said it makes it very difficult for so many patients because rheumie's won't even see them unless they test positive and by the time they do, too much damage has been done.

Is it the same with adrenal problems? you might get tested and the test comes back negative, only later to come back positive?

anyway, I'm wondering if my Sjogren's symptoms might not be more thyroid related. Since the vaginal dryness itsn't a problem since I started Armour, I'm wondering if the dry eyes/dry mouth will resolve as well. I'm not drinking as much water. I'm still drinking plenty but I noticed yesterday at work I didn't feel dry every single second.

thanks for your input. hugs, sheila

The deal about that is not Armour, but the fact that if a person has pretty bad adrenal exhaustion, that going upward on ANY thyroid med will cause them even more discomfort because they have not resolved their primary problem, which is the adrenal problem, in these particular cases. This is if the problem originated in the adrenals and has caused the thyroid problem. It's like throwing another wrench in the cogwheels because of cause and effect.

Re: -adrenal problem?

hi , i've read and heard folks say if you have adrenal problems, then Armour will not help you. Have you also heard this?

Also, someone in another group said sometimes folks with adrenal problems do well initially on Armour and then have problems.

Have you or anyone heard this?

I guess I was thinking that since I was doing well on Armour my adrenals were okay. Opinions...

Oink...back at ya! Hugs, Sheila
