Here's the scoop about your query.......

These are basically neuroendocrine cells found in GI where they are also called

enterochromaffin cells (the current books don't seperate them anymore). The

basic difference is their staining properties to silver stain.So these are

reactions.

 

Argyrophil reaction:  Two step process. The cells retain siver ions which

become visible after subsequent reduction by another agent. Gremelius,

Sevier-Munger and Hellerstrom-Hellman Silver staining methods are based on

argyrophil reaction.

Chromogranin A causes this reaction along with dopamine, noradrenaline and

serotonin.

 

Argentaffin reaction:  One step process. These cells contain chemical sustances

which can retain Silver ions from ammoniacal Silver solution and reduce them to

metallic silver. Masson stain is based on these reaction. This reaction is

positive for dopa, dopamine, noradrenaline, adrenaline and 5-hydroxytryptophan.

 

Regarding tumor behavior...... small intestinal carcinoids produce serotonin

(argyrophillic) and are more aggressive than stomach, large intestine and

appendix which are incidental (argentaffinomas).

Dear Dr Mittal,

The staining part is from a histochemistry book.

In Stenberg's Diagnostic Surgical Pathology, carcinoids are classically divided

into foregut (stomach and duodenum), midgut (small bowel and proximal colon) and

hindgut (rectum and distal colon).

Although only appendiceal carcinoid is considered benign, all the others have

malignant potential. Vast majority are seen in small intestine and rectum. One

of the references does mention that small intestinal carcinoid are more

aggressive. But features which suggest malignancy are: size > 2cm and invasion

of muscularis propria.

Other morphologic features are cellular pleomorphism, mitotic figures and

necrosis. However, these are the features we look for. If present such

carcinoids are known as atypical carcinoids(especially in lung).

When we repot we donot classify any further than carcinoid.Regarding the

cells...... those are called neuroendocrine cells and nobody differentites them

any further.
