In addition to a possible GI infection, I would also think about a gluten intolerance and check her gliadin antibodies.

Hello Ladies,

Taenuia saginanta can also cause seizures. There a high frequency occurrence of this parasite among children in the US.

Hello Sobyl and Zoya,I have just started seeing a 14 year old girl with epilepsy.  Much of what you said about your patient rings true with mine as well - very childlike, digestive issues.  With my patient, she was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis a year or so ago.  Her MDs actually think that the UC was the underlying condition that created the epilepsy.  Something to think about with your patient.  I'm not using UNDA with her, but may in the future.  She is on a constitutional homeopathic (lac delphinum), but only took that 2 weeks ago, so I don't have a followup yet.  I'll be interested to hear how things go with your patient!

Dear Zoya,

I don't have the details of her neuro-fedback but I will find out. The blood supply aspect is something I never considered; many thanks for your thoughts. I know that in spite of seeing a Naturopath, Unda drainage was not used.

I wonder if eventually the brain protocol might help restore normal neurological  pathways that might have been affected by the birth trauma. I'll keep gathering ideas and promise to follow up with actual findings when I meet her... Sincerely, Sobyl

Hello Sobyl,

Here are a couple of thoughts:

When she did neurofeedback, was it done based on the EEG brain map? In seizures brain map should be done first to get proper lead placement and proper frequencies otherwise it can make things worse. Proper brain training can be very effective for seizures (neuroplasticity, blood supply etc).

There is a theory that a seizure is an electrical activity initiated by the brain to clear toxin accumulation. It is a detox/protection mechanism. Hair analysis only gives a short exposure history thus it is not helpful for the conditions with long history unless metal exposure is ongoing. There may be other toxins besides heavy metals. In addition to food allergy during the meal that can trigger the episode there is also a redistribution of blood supply, less going to the brain. Toxicity plus reduced blood supply may initiate an electrical response.

In good health,

Zoya

Date: Fri, 12 Mar 2010 11:31:24 -0800Hello group; I need your help about a young woman I will see at the end of this month. Yesterday I took her history with her Mom and I would love your assistance so that when I meet the daughter i will be even more prepared. here are the important history details:

1. During the birth process Mom was told to NOT PUSH and " hold her in " because the nurse wanted to wait til the midwife arrived. After the Mom held back on pushing the baby's heartbeat went from 130 down to 50. At birth she was blue and the doctor felt she might have an infection and he gave her Antibiotics and a spinal tap. He eventually concluded that the stress of the delivery was the cause of her blue presentation.

2. After she came home, all seemed well. Generally healthy. Breast fed, no formula. Next AB's around 9 or 10 and she had a minor rash and was told to avoid penicillin. No high fevers or ear infections or allergies.. She may have seemed a little tired compared to her sibs but nothing dramatic.

3. Looking back parents recall that she fairly often complained of stomach aches, usually later in the day. She always took a long time to eat, always the last one at the table. It's still true.

4. The daughter remembers looking back that she can recall times when people spoke and it sounded like gibberish to her which is actually true for peptit mal seizures. She was scared by it and never mentioned it to her parents.

5. Her family life was stable happy active and loving with a usual amount of sibling fighting but nothing out of the ordinary.

6. Mom recalls looking back that there may have been times when Cori seemed spaced out when she spoke to her but again, it's vague..

7. Age 14 she had a her first grand mal seizure at home, while asleep after being at a friend's house for dinner. That night she had eaten hamburger helper which is unusual since her family ate a pretty whole food diet. Her Dad has an allergy to MSG that caused serious heart palpitations. Unsure if it was significant for her. She was also recovering from a cold at the time.

8.      She started her period the next year; very low body fat and was athletic. No period after that for awhile so she was put on birth control pills which didn't regulate it and it also didn't clear her acne; and she ended up with a 10 day long period with very heavy flow so they took her off the pill. THYROID was never checked. And at 21 she still has acne. Still has no regular period.

Statistically the neurologist said that there is an association with seizure onset and puberty. Often she sees people have one seizure and then no more. Another neuro told her that seizures cause   " leaking out " of leutinizing hormone which doesn't allow for a normal period.

9. All medications tried have worked to some degree to reduce the frequency of her seizures but as soon as the doctor raise the dose to the therapeutic level it stops working. Do we have a liver detox issue here?  the worst reaction was from Depacoat which created a seizure that she couldn't come out of and had to go to the ER..

10. In the beginning all of the grand mal seizures happened in bed either right after falling asleep or right before waking up. The petit mals always happened around food, while she was eating. Cranial stress? Food sensitivities? It could happen anywhere during or right after the meal.

11. Grand mal seizures are now sporadic, can happen almost anywhere. She had six in one day in the summer of 2006 when she was being weaned off medicine. Average of grand mals is about every two or three months. Petit mals; a few a week still mostly around eating.

12. She has had excellent cranio-sacral with no resulting change.

she has a " tight " sphenoid. Pituitary connection? Sessions of Neuro-biofeedback actually made her worse. Several natural medicine approaches including a comprehensive Standard Process protocol have also yielded no results. The SP doctor told her she had aluminum toxicity from a vaccination that he determined via muscle testing.

13. Heavy metal testing via hair revealed tin but that program also yielded no results.

14. Mom is dedicated but frustrated and feels that every time she tries something and it doesn't work she is " failing her daughter. " Needless to say, I would like to be able to help here and get the mystery answered. The daughter is in college away from home but does say, " I don't want to grow up. "

15. So Unda buddies, I welcome your help  and look forward to meeting this young lady. I will do my own version of food sensitivity testing via muscle testing and will review all bloodwork. They wondered if seizures were caused by insulinoma but it was ruled out. At first a trial of eating every two hours seemed to help but it didn't last.

16. No current blood work is available and the last one showed only a minor high Hgb . No good thyroid panel has been done. Any suggestions?

17. Heartfelt thanks for any and all input. I have a few weeks to prepare.... Sincerely, Sobyl Bunis, D.C. Santa Barbara and San Obispo
