I can't attest to MOM, but I do use straight mag malate with my kids. I find it to be very effective - I know many moms worry about overdosing on it. However, the body will excrete what it doesn't need, and you really only have to worry about toxicity in cases where the kidneys aren't working correctly. My kids have been on it for over a year and we have had NO problems (and even have the bloodwork done to check it). Most times magnesium is greatly lacking in the diet anyway. Someone else wondered why more doctors don't recommend it - how many doctors (that aren't wholistic) do you know that will recommend a vitamin or something natural over a prescription? They go with

something they believe is tried and true, and has clinical studies to back it up. There aren't nearly as many double blind clinical studies on supplements and other alternative treatments as there are medicine (remember it is the pharmaceutical companies that do many of the studies, and they don't make money in vitamins). So for anyone considering magnesium, I highly recommend it. It may not work for everyone, but it is def. worth a try.

jumping into the fray for a minute - our pediatric GI said she doesn't recommend magnesium (either MOM or mag citrite) becuase it can be absorbed in the blood stream and cause arrhythmia - does that make sense???? that was her caution against using the natural calm too much. she said she was all for it in critical back-ups, but that she wasn't comfortable with it as a daily thing. i think that was what i heard her say. i didn't repeat back to her - had the conversation with her while i was juggling a panicking client and a miserable daughter. can anyone shed light on what she said?

Can anyone be VERY specific on brands to look for and WHERE??? I

understand the body disgards whatever is extra and not needed but how

do you figure out dosage??? is there some kind of formula based on

weight? for example i've heard pump him full of Vit C and Mag. (high

dose) but what is a " high dose " ???? sorry but i'm as new as they come

to all of this!!!!

Below is a list of ome forms of magnesium commonly used in this group and some sources for purchasing (clearly not all inclusive - but a place to start and get ideas....) Dosing of any magnesium product can vary per child. Previous posts may

be helpful or if you have question about a specific magnesium product,

post a question and others using it may be able to offer more specific info. The JPGN review article in the files section gives general info on MOM dosing and says that it is about 1-2 mL/kg per day (in 1 or 2 doses). For reference, 1 lb = about 2.2 kg. So, for example, 35 lbs is equal to about 15.9 kg. So a dose of MOM for a 35lb child could be in the range of about 15-30mL per day according to this research review article. This is equivalent to 500-1000mg magnesium (elemental magnesium) per day.

Whether one needs 500-1000mg of magnesium when it is in a form other than magnesium hydroxide (the kind that is in MOM), is another story. For my 3.5 yr old son who is about 35 lbs, I give one OxyCleanse (173mg magnesium from magnesium peroxide) and 2 Kirkman Mag glycinate (total of 100 mg elemental magnesium). I arrived at this dose by trial - and (knock on wood) it seems to be working.
