Guest guest
Dear friends, Aisha, our daughter is 16 and in 10th grade. She always complains that I don't praise her enough of which I am guilty. Partly because of high expectations and partly because of my perfection. I take great pride in sharing the following. They have to write poems for school assignments quite often. I don't think anything could capture her identity as well as this poem has done !! Her recent trip to India for Milaap 84 has definitely influenced her writing !! Enjoy....  Where I’m From I’m from blazing temperatures, hot summer days, and spicy smells, From sweet fruits, blaring radio music, and stray animals on the streets. I’m from growing amounts of air and noise pollution with an increasing amount of people. I’m from the varieties of tasty spices, the array of complex languages, and the diversity of multiple cultures To glass-painted bangles, vibrant colored dresses with heavy beads, And new cultural lessons at every corner.  I’m from colorful, lively, and zestful days, Full of sweet surprises, outrageous good times, and ginger, cherished memories. I’m from draining schooldays, anticipated Fridays, and festive weekends. From boundless homework and impatient countdowns till the end of the day, To jubilant, exuberant Saturdays and calming, relaxing Sundays.  I’m from upbeat Bollywood to hip Hollywood From my mother country India to my home in Chicago. I’m from the universal world which is united as one, That’s where I am from.  Aishwarya Bhaskar Fwd by Ashok ' 84

Guest guest
Dear Ashok,  That was simply wonderful - and it is truly what I would have expected from Aisha - she is such a perceptive, thoughtful person - and wise beyond her years !  And - if you think you are perfection, think again - Aisha is much closer to it than you ! God bless her.  ( I do hope you meant " my perfectionism, and not " my perfection "  :- )  !!! )  Best  Prabha '84 Subject: Re: Where I'm From ! Guest guest
That is so lovely and apt-I am sure all we overseas parents want our kids to grow up with insight like that.... Am having a grt time in Poona...have had a lovely meeting with Kishoreda and his family in person....very warm and welcoming...topped by a yummy Chinese meal at Chungfa...nice Indian chinese with lots of ginger-garlic-yes reminds you why you come back to India like homing pigeons no matter where you live.... It felt like we were long lost friends tho the last time we had met was 1983 when I was a lowly 1st yr UG and he was Reg in Sewagram...so thanks for a lovely time Kishoreda. One thing I as always intrigued abt was abt meeting his other half as I have always maintained that behind a man's success is a very tolerant wife...Swati was amazingly calm and composed and in control...I suppose with such a dynamic man in the house she has perfected the art... Can any one give me Parimal's mobile-1982 batch. More later 82 To: mgims From: abhaskarmd@... Date: Sun, 5 Apr 2009 09:00:43 -0700 Subject: Where I'm From ! Guest guest
This is a really nice poem. Well done to Aisha. My 15 yr old daughter Sanaya also write's poems and 2 of her poems have been been published when she was 9 and 10 yrs old. She has not written much over the last few yrs-- lost interest /being a teenager etc etc. I am going to forward this one to her and hope she gets inspired to write again. Aisha's recent trip to India ( for the reunion ) was obviously the inspiration for the poem. Ashok ' 84 One big clarification - I actually meant perfectionism --- which makes sure that you always feel far from being perfect ;-) Truly speaking, perfectionism is a handicap....even worse...like a psychiatrist colleague of mine put it : " a disease " . I am happy that my kids did not inherit this trait.....infact they chide me all the time for being one ! And I really am grateful to Renuka for all her tolerance -- living with one is not easy at all ! Subject: Re: Where I'm From !
