Guest guest
Hi Amy and all! We've had a great deal of sucess gaining receptive language and then expressive language via the R & W program with many children. We have found that clients with strong visual abilities have benefited from this curriculum and in many cases, expressive verbal language has been acquired. For many clients, we've been able to successfully fade the written words and switched to verbal formats. Others, however, continue to rely on written instructional formats for instruction. Another plus is that this program may also be conducted on a computer. Reading comprehension and school curricula are easily adapted into this format. The difficulty may lie in visual discrimination and visual attention, however if a child is demonstrating generalized matching skills of words, this may be an indication that this format of teaching is of benefit. Another area of difficulty includes the initial stages may be slower than anticipated and desired. Furthermore, it's a stimuli driven program. Best of luck! I'm wondering if anyone here is using the Reading and Writing for Communication Program. I bought it at ABA this year and I'm really liking the teaching techniques. We've already come up with data sheets to monitor teaching and progress as there aren't any in the book. I'm wondering if anyone would like to share " pitfalls " or good things about the program. We've just started and the kiddo I'm working with has mastered 5-6 words (matching word to object). So we're not too far along. Thanks, Amy E.
