I apologize if this is not relevant to the interest of the group, but

I need help immediately and I thought some of you might be able to

help me. My 8-year old boy with autism is going to be admitted to the

hospital to undergo extensive dental work. At first, his

anesthesiologist was going to use sedatives through an IV to put him

to sleep, with the back up plan that, if my son started to wake up,

they would then use general anesthesia to put him completely under.

However, after reviewing my son's medical history, and realizing that

my son wore a heart monitor for 4 months after birth (because his

sister had died of apnea), the anesthesiologist thought it might be

better to go ahead and just use general anesthesia, so they can " have

better control of his breathing. " My questions are:

1. Isn't general anesthesia more risky than a sedative IV?

2. A mom just me that you should never give certain anesthesia

medicines to children with autism. She did not remember the names.

Does anyone know what they are?

3. Does anyone know if there some general precautions I should take

before or after my son goes into the surgery room?

I am supposed to talk to the anesthesiologist tomorrow, and I need to

know the answers to the above questions before they make a decision.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
