I have two questions. Tonight I bought my habaneros and vodka. The vodka I got was 100 proof, now that I'm ready to start I'm wondering if that will be too strong? Guest guest Posted May 5, 2010 Report Share Posted May 5, 2010 Hi . No, 100 proof is fine. What that means is it is 50% alcohol and 50% water. Alcohol percent is half of whatever the proof is. I usually use 80 proof, simply because it's here and cheapest. It still has close enough water to alcohol ratio that it's fine for tinctures. Yes, cheese cloth is fine, just fold it enough so that it's not letting small pieces of floaties go through, unless you like them. :-) I make all my tinctures the same way. Whatever herbs I have I throw in the blender, cover with vodka, blend, pour out, let it settle, and then make sure there's enough liquid covering the mash. You can put herbs in together for a formula. Like if you make Schulze's brain formula--it's is rosemary, gota kola, cayenne and gingko leaves. So you can put a handful of each in the blender, vodka and mix. Then you will have the brain formula already made up. Or, you can make each one of the herbs separate, let them sit for the 2 weeks or more, and strain and then mix them together for the formula. I kind of like the last way best, because that way I can only use part of the tinctures for that formula, and still have straight, one herb tincture left for use by itself--or for mixing something else together. But--it depends on the person and what you are looking for, or how you were taught, because some people say (and I believe) that the synergistic effect of tincturing the herbs together makes a different, stronger tincture than mixing it from separate tinctures. There are many formulas out there on the web. Some herbalists want to 'play doctor' and they love using straight grain alcohol, like everclear, and diluting it themselves. They will say " well this plant wants 50% alcohol and that plant only wants 30% alcohol " . And it's true. But as far as I'm concerned I like to keep things simple, and for just about all herbs vodka (either 80 or 100 proof) has the right water to alcohol ratio. Plus, I can at least tolerate vodka. Since I don't drink and don't like the taste of alcohol, it's about as close as I can get to not tasting the alcohol. One morning he also went into the grocery store first and bought a bag of oranges (as he is vegetarian) and then went to the liquor store and bought his bottle of vodka. It's such a good solvent too, so it should withdraw all the stuff out of the plants. He pretty much does the same thing--blend the herbs with DMSO, let it sit, shake daily, strain. He does also have one of those kitchen vacuum machines, for food. He places the tincture in a jar and vacuums it, lets that sit for a few days, then lets the air in, lets it sit for a few more days, then vacuums again. He says he thinks (and it makes sense) that he's getting more 'stuff' out of the plants that way. But it's not necessary if you don't have a vacuum. Don t worry, just make it like regular and you'll have a great tincture.
