Thanks you so much for responding to me!!! Today I spoke with the RN who takes all of the GI's autistic cases and asked her about the ribbon like poop. She said that she sees that with kids who are afraid to go for fear of pain and are sqeezing the muscles tighter in the anus while they are going. It made sense, though I had already considered that Ben might have poop issues because he holds it, but I had dismissed this because I really didn't get a sense of that from him. She again urged me to keep his poop really soft so that he doesn't have any pain so that he can heal from that psychological peice. Now I just don't know what to think. I feel so tormented by this!! Ugh!!!! I gave him miralx today because I have no better plan and after this cleanout I do NOT want to go back to wondering if he is backed up. How do we all know that exlax or high doeses of magnesium, or vit. c or b vitamins don't have their harmful side effects???? Who has done studies on that? How much can your kidneys take??? I guess I should post these quesitons to everyone. I have not noticed Ben having any bad side effects ffom Miralax. In fact, I've been rather thankful for the stuff, until this website. Were you ever told that your daughter had a streched colon? michelle

Re: confirmation of unobstructed bowels

Our GI did an xray after a weekend cleanout of our 4 year old to confirm that an old stool lodged in her large bowel had indeed passed. We continued her on Miralax after the cleanout. For several months I complained to her GI that her stools were always ribbon like or tape worm like in appearance. It sounds similar to what you are describing. After finding this website, her Dad & I decided to take her off the Miralax and within a few days her stools returned to normal (soft & round). I am convinced that the Miralax was causing the shape (no matter what size dose she was given) Once we stopped the Miralax, she also started coming to us and telling us she needed to go poop. When you was on Miralax, she had no sensation or feeling of ever needing to go poop. Also, before we discovered the blockage, we were giving her enemas every three to four days for almost three months. It was the only way to get any poop out of her. Our GI told us that the enemas would only remove the soft stool that was leaking around the blockage and were incapable of removing the blockage itself. We believe she had the blockage for about 9 months before it was discovered. We were constantly being told by her Ped that she was fine and we would just have to retrain her to go poop. What a load of BS! Follow your instincts and don't let the Doctors convince you that you are crazy or that they know your child better than you do! Good Luck!>> We've been battling constipation for a long time; aggressively since > last spring (in my opinion), and I thought things were moving along > ok until I saw my GI Dr. Because my son was in the middle of a bm > when we saw her, she was convinced that we have never really had him > cleaned out sufficiently to be working on maintenance.
