Guest guest
Hi : I just wanted to let you know that my naturopath has me on Iodoral along with Armour also. I never had my iodine level tested. I, however, do have a goiter and that is a sign that I need more iodine. I have been logging onto an iodine support group and can't get over how iodine helps with so many issues in the body, it is really fascinating. I take one, 12.5mg pill a day, although I am thinking of increasing that to two a day. Many people on the iodine website take 50mgs. a day. I won't go that far though unless the Dr. recommends that amount for me. I have read on this website that some people are allergic to iodine. I am just sharing what is working for me. If you are interested, the website is iodine The woman who owns the website is and she is very knowledgeable about all things pertaining to iodine. Good luck, Griebenow wrote: Hi,I started back on Armour middle of March. I went and saw a naturopathlast Wed. with the thought that he could test my adrenals w/saliva testas I had done before back where I used to live. His angle seemed to bea bit different and I'm not sure what to make of his recommendations. He took a urine and saliva sample and gave me recommendations based onwhat his little system said about them. One recommendation he gave to assist w/thyroid problems along w/takingArmour was Iodoral, which is a combo of iodine and potassium iodide.Anyone have any thought about this? I figure you'd need to be sure youwere low on iodine b4 using it. I tested myself using liquid iodine --two years ago, it stayed on my skin like 48 hours. Now after usingSynthroid for 20 months, it soaked in w/in 8 hours, which I was told byold ND would mean deficient in iodine. So maybe OK to use for awhile? He also did not think there was any problem with my adrenals. I haven'thad any blood work done yet, will soon of course, since I've been backon the Armour and don't know how well that is working, but based on howI'm feeling, I would think there are adrenal problems, since I had themin 05 and feel similar now. I'm thinking I will do the Diagnostech's 24hour saliva adrenal test. Do you just register with this Canary Cluborganization to get a good rate?also this ND said I could use progesterone suppl. Well, I just hadthat tested no more than a year ago by old ND and she said all thereproductive hormones were great, even tho adrenals weren't. IOW, seemslike he's telling me exactly the opposite of what she did. Is itpossible for things to switch in one year?? I'm just feeling extremelycautious of these results,...or any really that don't match up with whatI physically feel, ha! I am feeling emotionally better than before Iwent back to Armour, and that's encouraging, but things are NOT super yet. Thanks a bunch for any help you can give.-- Jamison Griebenow, skookieipro (DOT) netBlessed with husband Greg, Zachary c/s 8/95,Helena Joy HBAC 8/00, and Beren Gustav HB 4/04~~~~~~~Learn more about recovery from a difficult birth here:http://www.midwiferytoday.com/articles/healing_trauma.asp~~~~~~~April is Cesarean Awareness Month!See http://www.ican-online.org/ for more info! Guest guest
Iodine escess can also cause goiters. If the iodine you are taking seems to be shrinking the goiter that is great. But if it doesn't or if the goiter increases.............. Not only are some people allergic to iodine, but some Hashi's people react badly to it and find it actually stimulates antibody attacks. Most people with Grave's can't take iodine. In fact the Grave's list has info on how to avoid iodine (low iodine diet). I'm sorry to say I don't think knows anything except iodine, iodine, more iodine. I find her completely unreliable because she utterly refuses to concede any negative to iodine for anyone. Which is patently dangerous, since iodine has killed. And like her Dr. Brownstein she refuses to acknowledge that iodine toxicity is known to occur in Japan. I think all these pro iodine folks are careless in their insistence that iodine is never harmful at any dose. And I have also heard that Dr. Brownstein's research is very sloppy, and that there are patients of his who have had problems, but he apparently simply dismisses them. I call them the " Iodine Nazis " and they have caused me to leave lists where they shout down the least cautionary statements about iodine. All in all, before you jump in the middle of the iodine bandwagon, do some research on the " other side " and take what is said on that list with a HUGE grain of non-iodized, refined salt. LOL. I know many people claim to do well with iodine, and no doubt they do, but I truly wonder how many can actually take those toxic high doses for years on end. No doubt some can, but..............I still wonder. And since the iodine proponents dismiss anyone who has had any negative experiences with iodine, I cannot place any credence in their claims. EVERYTHING has negatives, and some people will have problems with any substance, no matter what it is. So I flat don't believe them that what they are doing is safe or desireable for every person on the planet. I know of at least one practitioner who says the average american diet contains 10 times the amount of iodine that is actually needed daily. (without supplementation). So most of us get plenty. And I personaly know a person who went to a Brownstein type doc, and got into trouble. When she went to a second doctor for her symptoms, he told her to " for god's sake stop taking all that iodine! " She did and her symptoms resolved. sol M. wrote: > I just wanted to let you know that my naturopath has me on Iodoral > along with Armour also. I never had my iodine level tested. Guest guest
Because I have Hashi's I have avoided iodine. Interestingly enough about 10 years ago I bought a liquid herbal supplement and in the instructions it said to consult with your doctor before taking it if you have thyroid disease because it does have iodine in it When I asked her she said it should be OK because I had a burnt -out thyroid Hashi's had done a number on me before I was diagnosed. I look back on those awful months now and think if I'd left it much longer ( it was me who put off going to the doctor's he took one look at me, and couldn't order thyroid testing fast enough ) then I'd have been in myxedema coma. But I felt so stupid going to the doctor and saying I was so tired I could barely crawl out of bed and when I did I'd just stand in the kitchen and cry However I ended up not taking it just to be on the safe side.I certainly don't think it is detrimental to my health by not taking it.I agree with sol...approach with caution. I know hashi's people who have had goitres and been fine with it, others who can't tolerate it Shomon's website has some good articles interestingly enough one an interview with Dr Brownstein some years ago with him saying that it is like putting gasoline on a forest fire if a thyroid disease patient takes iodine. I'll try to find it for you. I have yet to find out why he changed his mind on that There are tests that can be run ( urine ones? Not sure there) to determine if you have an iodine deficiency...............Meleese x ----- Original Message ----- > Iodine escess can also cause goiters. I have yet to find out why he changed his mind > on that > Well I have a very cynical guess--money. said once (if my memory serves) that he changed his mind for other reasons of course, but he has recanted that caution, and, if memory serves here as well, there has been some effort to get that earlier statement taken off Shomon's site. I hope that doesn't happen. Because I think it is the truth, and therefore I believe he was right back then and wrong now. Simply because I've heard stories that patients of his who have reacted badly to iodine do not get mentioned in his " research " . Therefore either he is fudging his results or those past patients of his who have left his practice are lying. Since I think the patients have little reason to lie, (though in the interest of accuracy I only have these reports 3rd hand) and he has a great financial interest in his " research " results confirming what he is now saying................. > tests to determine > if you have an iodine deficiency If you find any info on real tests that measure iodine levels in the body, please let me know. I am not averse to checking my iodine status, but cannot use the painting skin or " loading " tests, because of my severe iodine allergy problems. I've read those two tests are not accurate or even close to accurate anyway, particularly the skin painting test. sol

Guest guest
Thanks again! I am always happy to add to my iodine files, since iodine has had and continues to have such a huge impact on my life. sol nutralady2001 wrote: > And if you scroll to the bottom of the article you get some more links > >

Yes, I don't know how accurate if at all the skin test is as I tend to be cynical/cautious to start out with, but I did note my response this time was VERY difft. from before being back on Synthroid.... what that actually means I don't really know ;-).
