Re: Albuterol vs. Xoponex

I started using Albuterol in October, almost 3 months before I was

actually diagnosed with asthma. No doctors ever told me to use it as

a rescue inhaler; it was prescribed to use 2 puffs every 4 to 6 hours

as needed! Another patient at respiratory rehab clued me in on that

important bit of info. When I tried to refill my Albuterol script the

first week of January, Walmart told me that as of Jan. 1, they were

no longer allowed to dispense Albuterol inhalers due to a problem

with the aerosol used. So my doctor prescribed Proventil, which seems

to work fairly well for me. However, my Medicare Part D insurance

company doesn't cover Proventil and just gave me a one-time exception

so I wouldn't go without an inhaler. They suggested Xopenex instead,

which they do cover. (Although I haven't found out yet what that will

cost me; generics for me are free because of my low income.) I will

see my doc on Friday, so I'll ask her to prescribe Xopenex and see

how that works for me. It's good to hear both the good and bad

feedback about others' experiences with it.

Hi Mike. I forgot about that one. That hasn't happened to me for a long time. When I am really sick and using a lot of the Xopenex my voice does change. Good reminder, that is the only side effect that I have had.

Xopenex did it's magic for my lungs, but proved to be the culprit behind my voice going away. When I switched from Xopenex (after 1 year of use) and back to Albuterol (cost being the main reason) my voice began to come back. After 3 months on Albuterol, I can laugh and sing at church again. Similar meds . . . very different reaction. Mike McBrideDon't cry because it's over, laugh because it happened. Dr. Seuss

They tried xoponex with me in the hospital a couple of times, and itjust does not work for me. I know it is just a more refined versionof albuterol, but whatever they do in that process changes it justenough that it doesn't seem to have any effect at all with me. I justhave to deal with the shakes from the albuterol. Although after usingit 4 times a day for months now, I don't have near the symptoms I usedto. Do you do other singing besides in your church? That would be a hard one for me, because I always wanted to be a singer. But unfortunately I am tone deaf.LOL>Singing or breathing a tough call especially if the person makes a living from it.

I wonder, is all of this stuff we take for asthma addictive, and will we need greater amounts over time?

Now see Xoponex works great with me, it doesn't cause my heart to race asfast, I do get the shakes if I haven't used it in a while, but the Xanaxtakes care of that. What I don't get is Proventil IS Albuterol so why havethey been prescribing it to me knowing my heart situation? You betterbelieve I'll be asking next Friday when I go in for the food allergytesting! I used the Xopenex in my neb treatments and my copay was $35. The Albuterol copay is less than half of that. On days when I neb 4x and use my rescue inhaler as well, I also get tachycardia. Fortunately, that does not happen often anymore. Mike McBrideDon't cry because it's over, laugh because it happened. Dr. Seuss

Mike, is the xoponex rescue inhaler more expensive than the Albuterol? What do you use in your machine? I've been using Xoponex since shortly after I was diagnosed and found that I couldn't use the straight Albuterol due to what it did to my heart and I'd get big headaches with each treatment.

Almost no singing elsewhere. In the Orthodox Church, there are no instruments other than the voice and nothing, save the sermon, is spoken, all is chanted/sung. I am in the choir and love singing. Byzantine chant is beautiful, to me anyway. Mike McBrideDon't cry because it's over, laugh because it happened. Dr. Seuss

Do any of you know about the Extra Help you can get from the Social Security System. I am on Security Blue, and I get the Extra Help. It is for people who take a lot of prescriptions. I also have part D.. But it is free, and my copayments are anywhere between, 6 and 8 dollars, never anymore than that. I am also on S.S.D.I.. Makes a big difference because I used to have to really juggle prescriptions every month.
