>Texas has a law mandating that educators use specific training to

attempt to de-escalate potentially harmful situations.

The techniques are taught in a two day session and is required

(recommended to)of those who work with kids like your son who face

communication difficulties (=behavior episodes).<

Dianne,

Would you mind summarizing the techniques?

Hi ,

One example is to engineer our spaces so that children feel less

threatened OR so that we do not unintentionally sabatoge their success.

An example would be having the workspace of a sprinter at the back of

the classroom as opposed to the front by the door.

There is alot to the training and the actual material (text)is often

subject to interpretation based on individual circumstances at the

time, but the law is fairly clear about what should and should not be

done.

In Texas, bodies or parts of bodies may no longer be legally restrained

in private. Those days and 'rights' are gone. Once any body part is

held, when the intention of the individual is to move it (hit, kick,

run off, throw), a parent must be notified and forms must be filed in

the office of the principal within (24-48 hrs.) and a copy goes in the

SPED file. The paperwork requires that the incident and ABCs be

documented and that strategies before the episode to prevent the

restraint be noted.

Trouble is big when the teacher goes to write up a restraint and cannot

think of anything she did to help prevent having restrained.

COOL!
