Guest guest
Dear and Everyone, I'm sorry I haven't acknowledged your welcome before now -- I lost my internet access for a while and I'm just now catching up with everything. But thanks for the welcome! I'm a 52yo woman living in the San Francisco Bay Area (East Bay). A little history: I've had thyroid disease since I was approx. 10 years old, but I was *correctly* dx'd with Hashimoto's in 1983. My experience is that there are symptoms and problems specific to Hashimoto's that aren't the same as other thyroid diseases(i.e., hypothyroid), although there are some similarities, too, of course. Although I've been told that Hashimoto's isn't in itself a progressive disease, the condition in my body has progressed (if that's the correct way to put it) to the fact that I had a rather " early " menopause that was also very difficult, I was dx'd with fibromyalgia in 1994, and dx'd with diabetes (non-insulin dependent type II) in 2002. I also have hypertension and obesity. My doctors are mostly in the UCSF system. Right now my thyroid levels are merely being " monitored " (which basically means nothing is being done). I'm on .2mg of Levoxyl for the thyroid. I tried T3 and didn't have a good reaction to it. Since I seem to have so many other " issues " , it's hard for me to just look at my labs and get any sort of cohesive answer. I have been with the Women's Clinic at UCSF for about 5 years and I'm not happy with them. My PCP, who recently left the clinic and UCSF, is an expert of sorts in heart disease in women, so it was good for me to have her oversee my hypertension treatment, since my bp was getting into the scary range. But she's gone now, so I'm moving on… I have a " new patient " appt in the Gen Med Clinic (again at UCSF) in August, and I'm hoping a new face may have new ideas. But the problem is that my experience and what I've heard is that UCSF is pretty conservative about thyroid issues. Anyway, sorry for the long narrative. I actually did my best to pare it down! I look forward to learning and sharing with you all. Nan > From our new member Nan: > > " I saw your invitation to join from the bayareathyroid group. Guest guest
BTW, nan - i forgot to mention that i was told that hashimotos is a autoimmune disease process that is progressive - and is basically our own bodies producing protein that will eventually totally kill our thyroid --- please someone jump in here if i'm wrong b/c i haven't yet been to my endo but this is what i was told and read in articles as well --- i was also told that they will either do nothing and just continue with hypo meds like we are on or remove the thyroid. i also read in an article where ppl with very elevated antibodies were treated with high dose long term (year or more) steroids to clear up the inflammation and therefore lowering the #'s but i don't know how long that lasts and steroids wreak havok on the body so i don't think i would be open to that idea - if i'm going to eventually have a dead thyroid anyway i'm more for getting it out and prevent the fluctuation of levels - its killing me. i need to see my dr and find out more but i know i'm not going to just do nothing - i feel too bad. visit our website www.geocities.com/tanyarn96/countryside.html www.poncetihomes.com -- Re: Welcome new member Nan Dear and Everyone,I'm sorry I haven't acknowledged your welcome before now -- Ilost my internet access for a while and I'm just now catching up with everything.
