Do not be afraid of the Plaquenil - I have been on it for some time as it is

one of the core meds for lupus (the " source " of my EN) and have had no

problems. Yes, it MAY cause problems but these are easily avoided by having

your eyes checked with what is called " visual field acuity " test every 6

months to a year. Quinine (which is the base of this drug) MAY cause a loss

of peripheral vision - it is one of the warnings on the list of cautions but

it is very rare. Neither my rheumatologist (in practice about 25 years) who

has prescribed it for thousands of patients nor my ophthalmologist (also in

practice for about the same length of time) with over 200 patients on whom

he does the visual field test has ever had the problem show up in a patient.

If it does, then you simply stop taking the drug - it is not a dramatic

sudden loss of vision but a gradually lose of the " outer edges " . I am in

two " virtual " lupus support groups and one group that meets face to face -

in the three years since I have been involved with them, ONE person on

Plaquenil has experienced eye problems and has been switched to an immune

suppressant drug instead.

One word of warning - it does take several months for the Plaquenil to kick

in to it's maximum " punch " - it took about 4 months before my fatigue level

(my main lupus symptom) and rashes showed appreciable improvement. The only

other medication I am on is a prescription NSAID (Sulindac) - both help with

the RA symptoms that come with lupus but the NSAID only helps the RA

stiffness and aids in controlling the inflammation whereas the Plaquenil

assists there it primarily controls the immune system which has gone wild.

Dear ,

I can appreciate your frustration! I wasn't familiar with either

Bextra or Paquinil so I did a search and added these Prescription

Drugs to our Links. The side effects sound quite frightening. As

once told me " All drugs have side effects " . Sometimes the side

effects are worse than the disorder you are using them for. In the

meantime, here is a link about RA that may give you some non- drug ideas:

http://www.arthritis.org/conditions/self_care.asp

I know you are already doing lots of the things mentioned like weight

loss and healthful diet, but maybe this link will give you other ideas.

You have such a wonderful attitude , and I am so sorry you

are having such a hard time. My friend, Sabina who has arthritis, says

that swimming helps her and that the warmer weather is good too. Today

I read that ginger root is good to reduce inflammation. Sabina is

giving it a try.

Take care of yourself. I will be praying that you feel better soon.

Love,

Plaquenil alone will not work. You need something to go with this med.

You should also know that when taking Plaquenil, you must blanch or Par Boil all vegetables grown in the ground.

Plaquenil lowers your resistance farther so you are more susceptible to bacteria. So the ground harbors this and if not properly cleaned we are in trouble.

I was on Plaqenil.

These are my Sarcoidosis meds since I am not taking or doing anything for the EN. Methotrexate, Imuran and for pain Vicodin not only from Sarc and EN, but also broken back in two places.
