First, let me welcome you to our group. I hope you

find valuable information here, as well as support.

I have thought about something in this post for

several days.

You said:

I, as well as many others, also struggle with taking

medication or not taking it.

For many years I tried to tough it out. Actually, the

doctors were not much help then, not really taking

severe headaches in a woman very seriously 20+ years

ago, so I pretty much had to tough it out with OTC. I

guess I am lucky (and unlukcy) that narcotic type pain

meds don't help my headaches, so they were not an

option for me.

I had left, or lost, several jobs, due to my intense

intractable headaches and the weird headache hangover

effect for several days afterward. I did not want to

complain or tell my boss for fear of lsoing my jobs,

but I lost them anyway.

When Imitrex came on the market it was like a miracle

drug for me. My Chiari had not been diagnosed but a

dcotor doing clinical trials of Imitrex diganosed my

migraines as well a what he called about 7 different

types of head pain for which he had no explanation,

other than migraines, sinus, tension and " unknown. "

With Imitrex I was able to stop at a few of the

headaches and get back to work. Perhaps it masked the

problem but it also made it possible for me to keep

working, with less pain.

I also have to remind myself that taking care of my

pain and symptoms is not much different from someone

who must pay attention to their high blood pressure or

diabetes. It's a no brainer that they need to take

their meds and watch their activity. I would never

say to soemone to try to " tough it out " with their

diabetes or heart problems. So, why should I tough it

out when I also have a chronic problme that needs

attention?

I guess my point, if I have one, is that sometimes I

choose to take medications so I can get on with my

life and keep working, rather than to risk my job or

my livelihood.
