Guest guest Posted July 13, 2004 Report Share Posted July 13, 2004 we received a cadaver kidney that did not come as advertised. this surgeon had to spend a considerable amount of time manipulating (basically creating an artery) on the kidney before he could transplant it into the recipient. these were two separate surgical procedures, so shouldn't the surgeon be able to bill for both? if so what code would be used for this procedure? Guest guest Posted July 13, 2004 Report Share Posted July 13, 2004 HI , When you review the responsibilities of the surgeon that recovers the kidney, you will see that they have the responsibility for making sure that the kidney is transplantable. The transplant surgeon is to take the kidney and transplant it. Just like in orthopediec surgery (I am pretty sure) if the surgeon has to adjust the implant to make it fit, there is no additional fee. Medicare has not yet recognized the necessity foror assigned a " back bench " fee. It is not a separately billable charge. We get the same sort of question about the need to, " clean up " an organ, to " remove excess arteries/veins " , etc. Hope this helps.
