Elaine,

Sorry to hear about your husband and his having Hep C.

Doctor can make you feel like you are a skid row alkie when it comes

to the subject of drinking. On the next appt. confront the doctor

with it. Have your husband tell him, I will not drink at all never

ever again. That is what I told my doctor. I would occasionally

drink a glass of wine with supper, and have a beer while mowing the

lawn. Now I wasn't mowing the yard everyday. LOL But I told the

doctor this and I got the same yadda yadda from my doctor. I set him

straight right then and there. I told him, look this is the only body

I have. If I drink alcohol then I increase the virus. Look I am not

going to do that. I have a power called will power. Doc,don't sweat

about this it ain't gonna happen.

He said you are the first person to stand up to me and tell me that

not drinking is not going to be a problem.

One the sex drive, it could be the thyroid problem, or the Hep C.

Because with the thyroid you are talking about hormones, and with

the Hep C, it is that he might feel so fatiqued from the Hep C that

he just doesn't want to make the effort. Plus depression affects the

sex drive. And he is probably very depressed at this stage in the

game. Have him talk to his doctor about some anti-depressants. And

see if you guys can get into a support group in your area. I am

talking a real life one. There are people there that can help you

alot.

Love

I go to " Group Death " as its called here but I have to say that

since I was diagnosed long ago the drs Ive been associated with are

real people with concerns for my health and well being. I know of

no thyroid problems I am having but I can say that my libido at 55

with hep was still VERY strong! Read that as frequent daily

thoughts.

Since Ive been on if/rbv and prozac for depression (which was just

doubled in dose) I remember sex...

However my libido does surprise me occassionally but mostly with the

help of someone that cares for me, understands what I am going

through and is willing to assist in arousal. So there is

satisfaction on both sides. Albiet a satisfactory erection but I

dont even think about an orgasm during sex, requires too much mental

energy.

Good luck to you and your hubby and keep up the understanding.

One Love.

Hello Elaine,

I'm a caregiver for my partner who has Hep C/cirrohisis/End Stage Liver Disease.

I " m sorry your doctor is being so insensitive towards . It's not acceptable

in any circumstances. Perhaps could consider switching primaries.

I just wanted to offer an opinion on a couple of your concerns.

1. Itching. Very often this is caused by a build up in the body of bile salts.

Make sure you get copies of all 's blood work and see if his bilirubin is

elevated. If it is, there's your culprit. There are medications that can be

prescribed that can be helpful. My partner Daryl found that phenergan was the

only antihistamine that gave him real relief.

2. Sex drive. You'll need to ask your dr to order a specific test here. He

needs his testosterone levels checked. Oftentimes it's simply because they feel

so sick and tired that the last thing on their minds is intimacy, however,

testosterone is in part produced in the liver and if his liver is ill, he may

not be producing the right levels of the hormone.

It's a real balancing act trying to keep the body on an even keel but with good

doctors it can be done.

hep C

My husband was bit by an inmate while he was a correctional officer 9

yrs ago. He was told the inmate had Hep A. My husband () was

treated for A. Because of not feeling himself... he went to his

Primary Dr and he was given blood work. The results were, hyperactive

thyroid and active hepititus. He went to the Hep dr and the Dr told

him that due to the symptoms he believed he has cirrossis but the

thyroid problems had to be taken care of first. This was done a

couple weeks ago..the thyroid scan came back normal (thyroid Dr said

it was " in remission " Back to the liver Dr yesterday...He was

concerned about the thyroid being normal now when 4 wks ago it was 2x

as active. The Dr has ordered a CT scan and upper GI. He made

feel like he was an acholic even though he is not a drinker. He said

he wants to make sure there is no drinking for 6 months before he

even thinks about treatment IF ha is a candidate. He said because

feels bad now, he may not be because the treatment will make him

feel worse. After the tests are done it will be at least 6 months

before he will do a liver biopsy and then MAY do treatment. He was

told that in the meantime he will not get worse. He told us has

a 60% chance of getting better.

itches ALL the time, any suggestions. Dr suggested Bendryl, but

he can't take it and work.

Is a side effect of Hep C... no sexual interest? Or could that be the

thyroid. Dr didn't answer this. has taken Herb and Prosylon to

see if that helped and it didn't.

He is not the same man I married and it is hard on both of us. He

won't go to get help though. ANY suggestions PLEASE

Yes Elaine, eventually he will need a complete liver transplant but just at the

moment, he's too well for transplant. Daryl was diagnosed around this time

last year, with Hep C, cirrhosis, and ESLD (also known as Decompensating Liver

Disease). He spent 12 weeks in hospital fighting for his life after he

contracted a golden staf infection. At that time he was listed for a

liver/kidney transplant but through a miracle, he fought off the infection and

has recovered so far that he's not sick enough to be transplanted right now.

Everyday is a balancing act to keep him as well as he can be, which is why it is

just SO important to educate yourself about Hep C and it's possible

consequences. Unfortunately Daryl won't be able to have treatment for the Hep C

until he gets his new liver, so we live with Hep C everyday and do you know

what? It's not as scary as it first seems.

Re: hep C

anne,

Thank you so very much for your information. Not even the Drs suggested any

of this.

End Liver ? Does this mean he will have to have a transplant?
