For those of you who've had asthma for a while now and are in states that

are hit by hurricanes and tropical systems, How to you medically prepare for

the drop in pressure? We haven't really had anything big come towards MD

since Isabel, and she did some damage with tornados and such. I have 2

months worth of medication but honestly haven't much of a clue as to how to

prevent tanking of the asthma with a system such as these. Looks like Hannah

may take a shot as some point of the Eastern Sea Board. Thanks for your

advise and suggestions in advance, and those in the path of Gusto (SP?)

please take great care and let us know how you make out.

I understand where you are coming from. to tell you the truth I have never had a problem with my

asthma during a hurricane. The only problem I have is getting refills for my inhaler from my doctor.

For some reason he refuse to send in refills until I go to his office and chew him out first.

What in the heck does he think your going to do with them? My insurance company calls my every 30 days and and always asks if I have enough of my meds incase of an emergency by mother nature. I have a 90 day supply of everything in my cabinet, if a hurricane comes this way it all will go into my emergency back pack

Don't know about any such laws. All I know is that (as a self-employed

writer) I'm denied coverage because I have a pre-existing condition

(asthma). So I pay all my own bills out of pocket. And if I can't

afford them, I do without. I've never had a problem until about the

last 10 years. Probably due to aging. And before somebody says " well

go out and find a REAL job, " I have made my living for the past 30

years as a self-employed writer/author. Have looked into some sorts of

fulltime jobs, but companies that employ writers are getting scarcer;

those that do have an opening don't want to take on a 60-yr-old widow

with a pre-existing health condition because their health insurance

costs go up.

I don't fear dying, but I do hate to die here at home alone because it

will probably be days before anybody finds my body. Ewww! LOL!

Oh Martha, I do so wish things were different for you concerning all this. I didn't realize you were self employed. Have you been able to go through your local health department to get medical insurance and help with your prescriptions? I know here in MD you can get help.

I wish you all the best

About rescue inhalers, etc.

I get mine from alldaychemist.com.

I do have a prescription for it, but they do not always require

prescriptions.

Before you all groan.

I am on a COPD list and many people there use this pharmacy which is

from India

When it comes to inhalers, you quickly know if they will work or not and

mine have worked just fine.

It's cheaper for me , on Soc.Sec. to get some of my meds from them, than

to face the dreaded soc.Sec. 'donut hole' early.

I have no financial interest in this company, just like many others use

some of their meds to save money and am satisfied with their products.

do not know if any of you use Spiriva. Their inhalers are really space

age design, just to suck up some meds. Alldaychemist has the same

medicine ( different name) and their 'suck up' part ( both are spin

inhalers ) is a simple little plastic gadget that works just fine, but

cost maybe a penny.

It's my choice to use this company, although I am sometimes afraid that

the police will show up at my house , for what I do not know really :)

Is it really illegal to get your meds from a foreign country? All I

know, many on that COPD list use this place and are happy with it. The

shipping charges are high, but easily made up by ordering several

inhalers at a time. I like to have one by my bed, in my purse and car.

OK, I hope I am not getting in trouble with this post.

Also, I do not recommend for anyone to bypass your Doc, mine know I use

this company and are Ok with it. But than I have good doctors :)

They also trust me and my use of the inhalers, I've been using them for

a long time.

I don't think any less of you, You have to do what you have to do to be able

to afford your meds. If the USA wasn't so expensive the US citizen's

wouldn't be ordering their meds outside of the USA. I'm just glad your able

to get your meds.

Terry...Florida is one of those really screwed up states. It goes WAAAAAAAAY beyond hanging chads. When I went to the ER I ended up in one that had ONE dr on duty on a Friday night who could not do sutures. He aslo didnt feel I was having problems asthma related b/c I had o2 sats in the 96-98% level. Nevermind that I couldnt stop coughing.

THEN I got a bill from the hospital for 465.00 charging me for the doctor and 3 pills of prednisone (I only got one). THEN I got ANOTHER bill from the doctor. THEN I got a bill from my insurance co saying I had to pay 20% of the hospital and ALL of the doctor b/c the doctor was not in their network. Like I had a friggin choice.

In NY if you went to the ER you paid one copay and thats it. The doctors dont bill you for their time.

Then I tried to get a follow up appointment with the doctor this guy told me to go to and they refused to see me for a month b/c I was a new patient. So I went without asthma meds for another month before I got seen...and that was the average wait time no matter who I talked to. Even my aunt couldnt get me into her doctor any faster.

Hi Ann:

That is really horrible and unconscionable. Sounds like they didn't

know a damn thing about asthma, and looked up in a textbook how to

treat you. No nebulizer, either! THAT is standard protocol everywhere

at any ER, except where you were. OMG!

ER care should be 100% covered except for your copay. I keep a stock

of extra meds JUST in case, and for any trips. Pack your nebulizer as

well, you never know.

When my peak flow goes down to 200, and I don't respond to treatment

at home, especially after using my nebulizer, I go to the ER. Closest

one if needed. If I can't drive myself, I go to the Fire Dept. Rescue

and get the ambulance ride with oxygen on the way.

This past May 29 was my last attack from the Pine Barrens pollen. So

I went to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. I told admitting

girl to HURRY UP before I ran out of air, she took so damn long. I'll

go to Stony Brook University Hospital from now on if I can. At least

there they treat you quickly and take good care of you with the meds

and nebulizer.

Don't believe the drug companies or doctors about using meds past the

expiration date, either. They can still work almost as well as fresh

ones, as long as they are stored properly and not contaminated with

exposure to humidity and air.

Sincerely,

Pre-existing conditions are not supposed to be used against you when getting health care and meds,, but they do make it hard on ya with big co-pays and deductables. I know someone with pre-existing condition and they charged $1000.00 deductable. and big med deductable, I think congress needs to make a law where they can not make you pay high deductables and co-pays just because you areunfortionate to have a condition before you got the insurance,

Thank you, Terry. I lurk on the list and have felt terrible about your

health problems--well, everybody's, for that matter.

Have checked with the Health Dept., but there's not much they can do

except to give you advice: drink lots of fluids, have regular

check-ups, etc. I'm not aware of any assistance that Fla offers

because it is quite cash-strapped, currently. State/county budgets

have been cut drastically in an attempt to lower property taxes. My

county doesn't have a hospital or any doctors, so it makes getting

health care a challenge--must go to adjoining counties. I'm near

Gainesville (U of Fla), but it's more than a 100-mile drive, and it's

hard to make that drive if you're having a serious attack, especially

at night. Thanks again and hope you continue improving. --marty

A friend of mine in S Fla., who was in excruciating back pain, had to

wait three months to see a doctor. He couldn't find anything and sent

her to another doctor (another month's wait). After a YEAR of agony,

her fifth doctor finally found three fractures in her hip area and got

her on the mend. She had fallen one day and that's when the fractures

occurred. None of her prior doctors took their MRI and CT scans in the

right place to see the fractures. But it was an average wait of two

months between doctors. And she wasn't electing to go to other

doctors--it was doctors referring her to other doctors. In the

meantime she was fighting her insurance co. every inch of the way

because the insurer couldn't understand why she was seeing so many

doctors without a resolution and she was having trouble explaining that

it wasn't her fault--all the other doctors were referrals. --marty

A friend of mine in S Fla., who was in excruciating back pain, had to wait three months to see a doctor. He couldn't find anything and sent her to another doctor (another month's wait). After a YEAR of agony, her fifth doctor finally found three fractures in her hip area and got her on the mend. She had fallen one day and that's when the fractures occurred. None of her prior doctors took their MRI and CT scans in the right place to see the fractures. But it was an average wait of two months between doctors. And she wasn't electing to go to other doctors--it was doctors referring her to other doctors. In the meantime she was fighting her insurance co. every inch of the way because the insurer couldn't understand why she was seeing so many doctors without a resolution and she was having trouble explaining that it wasn't her fault--all the other doctors were referrals. --martyOn Saturday, August 30, 2008, at 08:21 , Terry wrote:

Thanks Martha, it's surely one thing after another, but I can't do anything to change this current situation so I'm just rolling with it until the dr and I decide what's the best course of action.

I wish I could gather all you guys and gals up and bring you to MD, they have a great health department that will give you according to your income health and prescription insurance, and each county has a hospital. I would love to have a magic wand to make everyone better.

Thank you, Terry. I lurk on the list and have felt terrible about your health problems--well, everybody's, for that matter. Have checked with the Health Dept., but there's not much they can do except to give you advice: drink lots of fluids, have regular check-ups, etc. I'm not aware of any assistance that Fla offers because it is quite cash-strapped, currently. State/county budgets have been cut drastically in an attempt to lower property taxes. My county doesn't have a hospital or any doctors, so it makes getting health care a challenge--must go to adjoining counties. I'm near Gainesville (U of Fla), but it's more than a 100-mile drive, and it's hard to make that drive if you're having a serious attack, especially at night. Thanks again and hope you continue improving. --marty On Saturday, August 30, 2008, at 05:29 , Terry wrote:

Oh Martha, I do so wish things were different for you concerning all this. I didn't realize you were self employed. Here in WA State when going to ER, I receive bill from hospital and

the doctor too! That started a few years ago. And an ambulance ride to

go 10 each way was just under a thousand dollars!

We also have the same problem with out of network, hospital or surgery

center is in network, but anesthetist always seems out of network. I

just don't get it! Then the patient has to pay more!

So much for a United States! I think all states should be the same

when it comes to alot of things!

WAAAAAAAAY beyond hanging chads.? When I went to the ER I ended up in

one that had ONE dr on duty on a Friday night who could not do

sutures.? He aslo didnt feel I was having problems asthma related b/c

I had o2 sats in the 96-98% level.? Nevermind that I couldnt stop

coughing.

was not in their network.? Like I had a friggin choice.

My doctor says I can use out of date meds too! He gives me alot of

samples to help me out! He knows all of my meds cost alot of money and

he won't allow me to work either.

I was a SAHM until my girls grew up, by the time they were in college,

my health deteriorated when I tried to work I spent more time home

sick than at work, he said no more working. I didn't work long enough

to be able to get Disability, so no extra money to help pay the bills.

Sometimes I feel like I'm a burden to my husband, he's been tryingto

save enough money up to retire and my medical problems dip into it all

of the time!
