Hello everybody!! Ma told me to write to all of you immediately, exam or no

exam. So, here’s a brief account of my trip.

The main motive of the trip, was to attend the CSSJ Summer Conference for high

school students, in collaboration with the UN. However, thanks to our teachers

accompanying us, we got to visit Washington DC and Niagara falls as well.

Washington DC and Niagara falls were the same old places, New York was something

new. Well, describing New York is like capturing moonlight in a glass. It’s

truly a glamorous city!!

At the conference, we were basically made aware of the serious issues that the

world faces today - a world where people are not as lucky as we are – a world

where a single piece of bread is considered a luxury – a world that desperately

cries out for help. We were spoken to, about how we, as students can initiate a

change in the world. In one of the UN conference halls, we attended a talk

regarding the world food crisis. The speaker was Ms. – I didn’t get her

surname clearly – who was associated with the World Food Program. She informed

us that the most important cause of hunger in most parts of the world is rising

inflation. Another reason is, farmers sell their produce to various chemical

industries for the production of various chemicals, instead of selling it as

food, since the industries pay them more. What interested me very much was this

website that she told us about - www.freerice. com It’s like a quiz, with MCQs

that test

your vocabulary. For every correct answer, you donate 20 grains of rice to the

World Food Prorgram. So do try it out, and introduce the game to your children

as well. It would be really profitable for students, as they can improve their

vocabulary, and feed the world at the same time.

Our presentations also went off very well. We were told to wear traditional

dresses for the presentations, so that attracted a big audience. Ma tells me to

inform you all that I wore a chudhidar for the presentation. Hence, the business

suits were superfluous. Anyway, we wore the business suits to the Broadway show

instead. Swarovski crystals went with it.

My Bharatanatyam recital was highly appreciated. They were fascinated by the

costume, and the make – up, particularly the eye make – up.

We made many friends. There were girls from the States, Brazil, Puerto Rico, and

we were the only group from India. There were a number of groups from USA, and a

few from Brazil.

I guess that’s all for now. My first terminals are round the corner, so I have

to continue with my preparation.

Regards to all,

Divya

Thanks, Renuka !

Actually, I had briefed one of the teachers accompanying the group regarding the

make up, and had packed in a photo of what the end result ought to look like.

Divya tells me that she looked fairly presentable. Photos of the dance were

taken by her friends, and all of them are busy with the exam preparations - so I

will be able to get those photos only in the first week of August.

Cheers,

What you say is so true - we need to preserve our " Indian-ness " , as it were, in

Divya's account of her trip to the UN

Hello everybody!! Ma told me to write to all of you immediately, exam or no

They were fascinated by the

costume, and the make – up, particularly the eye make – up.

we were the only group from India. There were a number of groups from USA, and a
