Guest guest
Ibuprofen (active ingredient in Advil and Motrin) worked well for me, until it destroyed my stomach. NSAIDs, like Ibuprofen, also carry cardiovascular risk. [NSAID stands for Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug] Ibuprofen can also be hard on your kidneys. I don't get a lot of pain relief from acetaminophen, but I know some people do, however you have to be careful with it because of the potential live toxicity. Whatever you choose, please talk to your doctor before taking ANY OTC medication on a regular basis. Opioids are the only class of pain medications that can be safely taken indefinitely. There are a few opioids that have toxic metabolites (like meperidine [Demerol] and codeine) that doctors do not recommend taking long-term. Also, any combination opioid (like Vicodin) that contains APAP (acetaminophen) can be toxic over time. Is there a reason that you are interested in OTC meds and not Rx ones? Opioids have been the ONLY things that helped with my headaches. I tried Tripans, Beta Blockers, Topamax, every OTC and Rx that my doctor and I could think of with no luck. Best of luck and keep us up to date. Steve M in PA In my desperate search for a decent OTC pain reliever, I feel like I've tried them all. I use them for headaches and body aches. Guest guest
Well, honestly? no OTC medication works as well as opiates now or I'd still only take otc meds.. But for headaches-- 2 excedrin. With some tension headaches I've gotten help from naproxyn-two caplets. I do find naproxyn helps with pain all over too, though nothing takes it all away. Guest guest
Tylenol 1s. They have codeine to give it that boost it needs and it's otc. I hate having to ask for narcotic analgesics from my GP. ________________________________ Subject: Which OTC pain reliever works best for you?
