Guest guest
It is not working so well here this year. The only reason I got to come home last night is overcrowding at the local hospitals mainly due to bacterial pneumonia (which is also what I cultured - but then I haven't had the vaccine). Guest guest
Madeline I am glad you are home. There is so much illness in the hospitals everywhere. I had the flue shot and don't know if that is why I did not get sick or not. I do have some sinus problems that I think I can overcome. Sunday in Church every other person was caughing. I wish those that are contageous would stay home. Prayerful that you will get better soon. You have such a good attitude and that's half the battle. Guest guest
I know that some of you do not like me, but I still have an opinion of vaccines. It is free choice. No one is making anyone do a vaccine. There are people who are very happy that they have not done vaccines, and then there are people who have done the vaccines that still bitch, and then there are people like me who are thankful that I have the choice to do a vaccine or not. I did get a pneumonia vaccine this year. It will not keep me from walking or other viral pneumonia, nor will it keep me from fungal pneumonia, and most likely would not keep me from getting pneumonia if I were real old or terribly disabled in a nursing home where my normal defenses were down to the lowest. I might live, or I might die in the nursing home, but at least I was given a vaccine to hope for the best. But I do believe it will keep me from getting bacterial pneumonia from the street, or the money I deal with. I have come across to many people who claim they have pneumonia, when all they really have is a very bad chest cold/bronchitis. They want people to feel sorry for them, and claim they have pneumonia. My dad almost died from it....he neglected it and did not go to a doctor, so I had to go and visit him a hospital and he did not even know I was there. He had tubes in his nose, ivs, he was rasping. They told me he had pneumonia. He survived it. True pneumonia is rare....he had it once, I had it once, and Rodney had it once when he was a small kid...he almost died too. I even question walking pneumonia.... I did get a flu shot this year too. I know it will not protect me from every strain of severe flu going on out there, but it may keep me from winding up in the hospital and losing days of work from a strain that it will protect me from. I chose to get it, and I am not bitching about it. I choose to take these vaccines, because I am well aware that my asthma makes me a lot more susceptible to these things, and if I get any dreaded disease, I just may not make it out of it. I am also aware of the side affects from the vaccines...but then again it is my choice...to get one or not get one. I guess I wonder why people get happy that they did not get a vaccine....and want me to be happy for them too. It makes me think they are having second thoughts. Getting vaccines is a personal choice....good or bad, it is a choice. Own up to your choice and I would think not dwell about it either way. Ok...go ahead and throw stones at me now....it is all about choices. One day we may not be able to have choices in the UnitedStates . I am glad I have choices still. Even if it is about stupid vaccines. :-) Cindi Madeline wrote: It is not working so well here this year. Guest guest
Thanks Lou. Either I will quickly get better or will be on a kidney transplant list. LOL. They have sent me home on Avelox, Levaquin, and one other antibiotic that I can't remember off the top of my head. I have had a sinus thing for several weeks. I think it just settled into my chest and gathered bacteria from there. I really should have gone to the doctor last week. I know with my immune issues, but me and my hard Irish head. You make sure to see your doc if your sinuses don't dry up soon! As for attitude, I really have a blessed life (you know perfect husband and kids - ROFL) or not enough sense to tell the difference. The only thing I would change is the fact that my husband has this moral issue about robbing a couple of banks. I hate making out a monthly budget. Oh, and I would like to play badmitton and camp again at some point. Like I said must be from my Irish ancestors (kissing the blarney stone)! My whole family is generally very cheerful - you know the saying " the nuts don't fall from the tree " (except my sister in Buffalo - the rest of us drive her crazy). My loving husband says " Men are from Mars, women are from Venus, but my family is from Pluto " (and now they say that is not even a planet)! We have been accused of not taking things serious enough many times. However, thank you for your kind words. Guest guest
I don't know if you are still up. I have been watching the Maverick Basketball game. Crazy game but they won. You know they say Laughter is the best medicine and I believe that. I also believe attituge in any illness is half the battle. If laughter makes you cough and sets off your asthma, find a way to keep from getting too excited. yes, you will need a lot of Yogurt to counter the antibotics. You have had a lot to deal with and I admire the way you deal with it. I got a new laptop for xmas and I am having a hard time getting used to it. Guest guest
It annoys me too when people are out and about wehn ill - I went to see the asthma nurse before Christmas, and in a nearly empty waiting room, an old lady came and sat next to me... and promptly started coughing all over me. I was soooo annoyed, especially as I was there becasue my asthma was getting worse!! Here, tehy are really stressing to people to stay off work and school if they are ill, as we have had the biggest outbreak of flu for years, and they reckon we are well overdue a serious pandemic. Guest guest
I had my flu jab this year; they made me. BUT, that was just before my asthma suddenly got worse. I still believe it's connected, and that would really put me off getting it again. Especuially as a lot of doctors have said they wouldn't have it. I'd not heard of a pneumonia vaccine before, but I don't think pneumonia is a major issue here. Jenn Tha can tek t'lass outta Yorkshire...! Guest guest
I was so tired when I wrote that post last night! It started with a co- worker...she claims she caught pnemonia three months ago...missed two days of work, got on antibiotics. The clincher in my mood last night is that she still has this deep cough, is bad mouthing her doctor for not getting rid of her illness, saying that the antibiotics did not work and should have, yet she and her husband smoke a lot, and they don't smoke "outside", meaning that there are two smokers in a tiny trailer. I know the second hand smoke is the worst thing in the world when you have some lung problems. I get frustrated, with her, and I love her to death and want to help, but I don't say too much too her...I just listen to her. Because she absolutlely pretty much knows it all, and is not asking for my advice....does that make sense? For me to try to tell her not to smoke in the house, and have her husband smoke outside too, and by the way maybe cut way down on her smoking, and she would probably throw something at me LOL! She is a true redhead, and she is young. anyways, sorry for the rant last night...it was not directed at any one person, I just had many thoughts, and I realize that every one has different situations, and my way will not work for them, anymore than others way work for me. I feel helpless with my co-worker because she is so head strong, thinks she is right, and it is the doctor's fault. Madeline, I am sorry that your immune system is so compromised. I feel for you!!! Hang in there! See, choices may be there for me, but it is not for every one and has nothing to do with the government. You cannot get vaccines because you can't. That sucks!! Guest guest
I totally agree. It is a choice. I made my choice to get the shots because of my experiences. I think that if I hadn't of had the shot, I would have been much sicker this year and last year when I had pnuemonia. Last year I had to work at home for 3 months, this year only a month, but I am not feeling too great. The first time I didn't have a shot when I had pnuemonia and I was out of work for six months, it was awful. I even tried to go back to work only parttime, and ended up back on antibiotics and in bed. Now, I try to catch it early, and if taking a shot gives me a chance of not being out of work for six months; then I am all for it. I remember the first time I had pnuemonia, I was so sick with 104+ fever, I barely made it to the hospital, and after giving me lots of exams, the doctor walked in and said. "You have real pnuemonia" and was totally shocked (he thought I just had the virus going around that year) because I was so young still and the fact that pnuemonia is pretty rare and that fact that I walked in by myself. I'm not much of a whiner, so everyone was shocked I was so sick, but as everyone knows when you feel like crap all the time, you learn to persevere. I get flu shots also because I was lucky enough to get the real type of flu that that can kill you, I thought it was a horrible experience, until I got the pnuemonia. I didn't even realize that there was viral pnumonia, I thought it was called a chest cold. I thought the pnuemonia was defined by the fact that it is bacterial. It is interesting to know that pnuemonia has a wider definition than I realized. It is so sad since we Asthma we have a better chance of getting real pnuemonia and upper respirtory infections. And bacterial Pnuemonia is so common in this area, since the air is so dry and cold in the winter with lots and lots of pollution, plus the desert fever, so wonderful. Someone looked out the window (on the third floor) today at work, and said, "hey its cloudy", and I said nope, its very sunny," and pointed to the sunny parking lot, "that is pollution you are looking at". Re: Re: pnuemococcal vaccine I know that some of you do not like me, but I still have an opinion of vaccines. It is free choice. No one is making anyone do a vaccine. Guest guest
I think you seemed fine. I didn't even realize you weren't doing great. We all get exhausted and frustrated, not being able to breathe well has a tendency to dampen the mood. Hopefully, she doesn't smoke around you. Guest guest
Yeah.. I know they do already have contingency plans in place, though, such as having a separate waiting area in doctors' surgeries for flu patients and everyone else. Mum is a nurse, but does not work in a hospital - she's on the community and goes to peoples' houses. However, if there were to be a massive flu outbreak, as the service she provides is important but not essential, she would be drafted in to work on the wards again. But remember, something that big would probably not be confined to just oen country... Jenn Tha can tek t'lass outta Yorkshire...! Don't brand me, don't classify me, don't tell me what to wear. Guest guest
You just rant away. It frustrates me as well when you see people who are obviouusly making their conditions worse. I used to be one of those who didn't think about how each individual choice would affect my health or those around me. Then I got sick myself. Isn't it sad that it can take a debilitating illness to get through our hard heads! Guest guest
Regarding vaccines, I hope you guys didnt think I was boasting about not getting them. I havent looked into the pnuemonia vaccine, but I have a past history of reacting to things that you just wouldnt expect. After 15 yrs I became allergic to my own allergy shots and came pretty close to an anaphylactic reaction. In the past Ive been advised not to get the flu shot b/c of a) sensitivity to eggs (although i eat them regularly now..) and possible allergies to the serum they use. For me, its not worth the risk of the reaction to get the shot. Add to that that Ive been lucky enough to have only had the flu once in my life and it just doesnt seem like I need to. Besides penicillin and sulfa, Im allergic to Tavist and just about any antihistamine with a non-drowsy formula ( I can take the regular kind, just not the non-drowsy stuff). I should do more research on the pnuemonia vaccine b/c I have also heard it helps others who get bronchitis regularly, which I do. I had walking pnuemonia in December, it showed on x-rays, and that I am convinced was because of my aunt who hosted Thanksgiving but was sicker than a dog. My other aunt over heard her telling a friend that she had an extremely bad case of bronchitis. My husband and aunt & uncle who were also at the house all got sick as well about the same time..but Im the only one with asthma. Im not begrudging anyone who does get the vaccines...nor am I trying to push my opinion. I just dont want to find out Im allergic to them too.. A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. Guest guest
Hey you! I can only imagine how I have asthma, and have had it all my life, and I find new things every day that I am allergic to. Being asthmatic make me and us prone to those things. I find it hard to get my flu vacs yearly...first it was a shortage, and then another shortage, and then this last year I finally called for an appointment and got mine. They make the vacs with eggs, so if one is allergic to eggs....uh oh! I guess I was also pondering on the posts previous on how most of the health professionals themselves do not get the vaccine for flu. I guess what I am trying to say is that it is very hard for me to get a vaccine here in a rural community...we do not have a frys or such that offers them...one has to make an appointment for one. If the people who can take the vaccine safely do not, what will happen if we get a flu epidemic? Counting on that flu vaccine has the flu that is going on around. I am teetering on to get one or not, and I was so happy to be able to get one without being on a waiting list this year. I am aware that the vaccination that I get will not keep me from every flu strain...is it a media scare? Do I really need it? Other than a really sore arm for a couple of days, and some heavy malaise the next day, I was ok. The pnuemonia vaccine was recommended to me because I had caught the real thing...bacterial once. THEY told me I was succeptible to it again because of that. I question that? Is that true? Now that I have had pneumonia once, will, or can I get it again just like that? I guess my biggest question is WHY? If I am careful about getting lots of sleep, taking all of my meds on time, washing my hands lots with handling so much money from customers, and taking a muli vitamin...why do I need the vaccine? I don't have an immune defiency problem other than the steroids that I take in inhalers...and I was told those were minimal.yet I have had other things crop up that indicate I am borderline...cysts in my underarms...borderline. I know I am borderline immune...is it the inhaled steroids? Is it the sleep I lose due to asthma? I don't have any other disease that I know of. My blood work comes up normal. One time I had a too much iron blood result, and they called me and freaked me out because I never heard of that one! Too many vitamins? LOL! I guess you stirred up questions in my mind in your original post. I did not take it as boasting.....it insteasd went to making me ask questions in my mind. I did feel like as much as I worked to get the vaccinations.....why did I do them? I guess I am wondering in my little world of choices....do I really need that flu vaccination? And to take it further....is it really a flu vaccination? LOL kinda. oh and so far this year...I have not gotten sick...no colds yet. I wash my hands about once an hour...as I handle lots of money, and sell lots of OTC cold and flu meds to customers. I try not to touch my nose, mouth or eyes until I have washed my hands. WOW. That seems to be working so far.......I just know a cold is waiting around the corner for me. I have such, such bad times when I catch colds. Bad news!!! They last fOrever!!!! Thank goodness for Tang and Chicken Noodle Soup with dark rye bread toasted with tons of butter, when I get a bad or even a cold!!!!! love you all! Cindi ps can't they just make a bubble for us asthmatics in the winter....nice and warm, with plenty of warm soups and drinks, and upright comfy pillows complete with a lap top and tv....music for those who need that? Guest guest
A bubble, ha! My daughter says I should just get a really big hamster ball. LOL. You raise a lot of really good questions Cindi. Maybe Ann and Matt can give us some insider info on those. I question the pneumonia thing as well. Especially as I just did some time for bacterial pneumonia. The cultures all came back positive. So, at least all the antibiotics (and subsequent need for Diflucan) were really necessary. I am lucky, I have never had the flu. Ever. I don't even get those little 3 day stomach/intestinal things that are always seeming to go around. I seem to have a natural immunity to that type of thing. My mom has never been susceptible to that type of thing either. Although, at this moment all bets are off. My antibiodies are pitifully low in the bloodwork that just came back today. There are several immune factors they look at weekly with me right now and my numbers are getting lower and lower. Gotta love those steroids! Madeline > > > > Regarding vaccines, I hope you guys didnt think I was boasting about > > not getting them.
