against future credits? I mean this social worker said the pt had NO work credits on her own or spouse's social security #, not just insufficient wc.

RE: Medicare Eligible

I understand you can “borrow” from spouse, but that spouse then loses those credits.

A dialysis social worker here once told me she was able to get "ESRD Medicare" for an adult patient who had no work credits through self OR spouse - does anyone know more about this? Urban myth?

Is the 24 hour dialysis a permanent thing or temporary? Is the dialysis due to ESRD? If so, I would think he could qualify for ESRD Medicare. I would ask Bill Vaughn or Aguiar.

I need assistance. Does anyone know of a patient on SSI, that is on 24 hourdialysisand needs a liver transplant can qualify for Medicare benefits due to thedialysis. This patient does not have enough work credits to qualify for disability, that'swhyhe was approved SSI instead, but he is from Cuba and I heard that because thesepatients are under political asylum the rules are different. I called SSA andthey couldnot give me a straight answer. Help! Thanks,Nury ColladoTransplants Financial CounselorTampa General Hospital

Patients with end-stage renal disease can qualify under a spouse's work record, just as a child can qualify for Medicare based on mom or dad's work record. Bev Do you have the Medicare publication for end-stage renal disease patients? This publication has this in it. Bev>>> lmorriso@... 7/16/2004 2:25:29 PM >>>

This does not affect the spouse's account with Social Security. If you look at the A,B, B1, B2 etc. this could be qualifying events formore than one spouse, i.e. people that are divorced etc. numerous times. As long as they meet the length of marriage qualification, they can qualify under their spouse for benefits. Bev>>> sstirlingburgin@... 7/16/2004 6:29:02 PM >>>

Thanks Bev, I do have the book and understand the eligibility under a spouse's work record. The story the dialysis sw told was that NEITHER the pt NOR her spouse had sufficient work credits (nor was she ever enrolled as disabled under a parent's social) but that nontheless pt got Medicare bases on ESRD. I find this hard to believe and that's why I ask if anyone knows of a similar example.

It may be that age played a part in the qualification as if you are younger some how they get Medicare.>>> lmorriso@... 7/19/2004 12:55:34 PM >>>
