I suspect it is because Christianity has been the dominant belief system of the Western World and many of us have a negative experience of some of the more organized and, IMHO, secularized forms of it. But that would be subject for discussion in another forum. My view on this matter is that rather than ban all spiritual references, we follow a policy of tolerance of same, particularly for those different from our own. I cannot, however take any credit for this point of views it was expressed long ago by the Forefathers of America and most recently reiterated so eloquently by Sara.
