Guest guest
" What is interesting to me is that we have all of these monitors to help with achieving pregnancy (add this new one to the list) and none that are approved for avoiding pregnancy. " I think the reason for this is simply that few, if anyone, will sue a company for not achieving a pregnancy but not vice versa! When I was at the Royal Women's Hospital in Melbourne many women brought in flowers and chocolates when they had a baby they had worked for. Fewer came in and said thank you for your help, I did not get pregnant this month. " If the research is based on women with normal hormone profiles (i.e., normally fertile women for the most part) it seems that the monitors would be more applicable for women with normal cycles that want to avoid. " It is always easier to deal with normal cycles. My colleague says that women with irregular cycles are the forgotten women. The Ovarian Monitor can deal with all types of cycles but the perception is that it is too difficult to use. The Ovarian Monitor was so-called because by measuring two hormones directly related to function (ovarian activity and corpus luteum competence)it is possible to " eavesdrop on the ovary " . Thus the window of fertility and the most fertile day can be identified accurately whether the cycle is irregular or normal. My point is not necessarily to promote the Monitor but to say that use of the Ovarian Monitor has shown that hormonal monitoring is possible and it is of immense value to NFP particularly for women with " difficult " cycles. " If you were conducting a monitor study for achieving pregnancy, it seems that it would be hard to find a large group of women with normal cycles and normal hormones. " Another colleague always said that all of her women were normal they just cycled differently at times. The database of hormonal data we have was based on the women of Melbourne who did not go on the pill. The NFP women therefore potentially provide the data but what is needed is easy access to accurate urinary hormonal assays to go with the symptomatic data. I am not sure what data has but I would love to see it. Regards from down under.
