Regardless of breastfeeding or not, if either parent has asthma the child has a 50% chance of also having asthma. I have asthma and so far neither of my 3 year old twins has asthma and I breastfed. lilli_nyc wrote: In reading the article posted about expectant moms and asthma, Iremembered this one and thought it interesting. I tried but was notable to breastfeed my daughter and at 6 yrs old, so far she has nothad any asthma. It doesn't mean much, I know, I didn't have asthmauntil my teens myself.

i had thought a lot of articles were claiming a lot of illnesses were coming from LACK of being breastfed, not the other way around.

let me rephase...I know that Ive read MOST articles claiming the health risks of LACK of breastfeeding...I am not aware of any that claim breastfeeding itself to be a risk...HOWEVER

with breastfeeding there are health risks of passing on things in the blood, be it STD's or Medications, etc. For example a mother or what not on medication that is breastfeeding IS giving certain amounts of the medication or hormones or residue in her milk ...

It's been awhile since I read stuff like this so other comments and research notes, preferrably with sources listed would be nice.

Yes, the general rule is that breast milk is best for babies, boosting

their immune system from illnesses. But this article was about a study

that seems to suggest asthmatic mothers' milk may have a component

that is not beneficial and even harmful to their babies lung development.

If you don't mind my asking, what meds did you take while pregnant and

breastfeeding, if any?

I breast fed both of my kids for a year, my oldest is 14yrs and youngest is 9yrs and neither one of them has asthma or show any signs of asthma. I have chronic asthma and allergies(since I was a teenager). They both do physical things like run, skateboard, swim, play at the playground. I thank the Lord that they are both healthy. advair is known to cause problems with many but not all people.

I saw an article recently to the effect that untreated asthma during

pregnancy seriously raises the odds of deformities in a baby, while

the standard medications are relatively benign. I wish I had seen it

when I was pregnant with my youngest daughter, back in '90. My

doctor recommended I use nothing but theophylline and albuterol. I

don't react well to albuterol and spent most of that pregnancy

huffing and puffing. The theophylline gave me terrible jitters and

insomnia: I didn't know I could go for months sleeping 2 or 3 hours

at night. That daughter, by the way, has always had severe issues

with her internal clock, as though she were from a planet with a 28-

hour day, and I am inclined to suspect exposure to a heavy-duty

stimulant before she was born had something to do with it. We might

both have been better off with the steroidal meds they use now.
