Hi Ann,

I agree, I would NEVER get rid of my "Boys" cats are brothers and twins, It would kill me. (and probably them, especially if they were ever separated, they cry if one can't see the other one).

I asked my Dr. about them when I was first diagnosed and she said we won't go there yet. About 6 months later when I was well controlled with my meds. I told her that one slept on my pillow with me and the other either under my arm or at my feet. Her answer was_____well guess that answers that !!! Thank God because I would not have been able to deal with it.

They love to ride in the truck when we vacation.

Hope your Dr. finds another reason.

allergy test results

So my allergy test results are apparently back and supposedly the single thing I am most allergic to is my cats. I dont buy it because I had the cats for 3 years before I moved to Florida and I did not have anywhere near the issues I have now. Ive had allergies all my life. Tree pollen & mold will trigger a flare up or attack alot faster than my cats have. I dont have a difference in my symptoms between being home and being away from the cats for a period of time. We were away from the cats for a week and a half last July after the wedding and I had the same symptoms I did before and after the wedding. He told me he wasnt going to suggest finding a new home for them and its a good thing b/c this is the only home one has ever known and one was dumped in a shelter once. Shes had anxiety issues ever since and I refuse to do that to her again. They are my babies and I will not give them up. For 5 yrs they have slept on my bed near my feet. I dont get red itchy puffy eyes after I touch them and touch my eyes. I dont react to them at all like I used to when I was young. In 1990s I was allergy tested and the results showed that I was least allergic to cats.He told me the reason that I only have problems during specific times of the year is because the other allergies put me over a threshold b/c the cats are keeping me at that threshold of what my body will accept. Fine, but when I didnt have cats the asthma was worst in Spring and Fall in NY...times of high pollen and high mold. It was no different after I had the cats. In two years here in Florida when the oak pollen is at its highest Ive found myself in the ER once and in Urgent Care the second year...(and that shouldve been the ER)He tried to tell me that I am not significantly allergic to anything else...but yet all my life Ive had significant environmental allergies. I dont understand....I know allergies can change, and I know mine have...except for the tree/grass pollens and molds. These do and always have set me off. I used to get wicked bronchitis every single fall and spring for about 7 years straight during the 90s. Thats where the asthma diagnosis & active treatment came in. Got that under control and until I came to Florida I had bronchitis twice in 5 years( pre cat years btw). Since Ive been here 2 years Ive had bronchitis 2 times in 2 years.I dont know all the results b/c we only spoke over the phone. I have to schedule a follow up appointment so we can discuss it more thoroughly but Im devastated that my cats are whats supposedly my biggest problem. They did the Ig E blood testing vs skin testing btw.Anyway...thanks for letting me vent a little. Im really kind of upset. But I do know that I am NOT giving up my babies.Ann

Try the allergy shots they can really put a stop to you having to get rid of your pets, I still have my Chocolate lab but she stays outside, but I'm so sensitive that I can't go into family member's house with dogs or cats, I usually try to visit when we can be outside, they all understand and I'm not ready for the shots yet, gotta get this other heath stuff worked out first, this thyroid thing had me a bit scared, tonight when I was laughing it actually hurt my throat, I came home I felt as if my throat was closing shut, I did my peak flow and it was good well into the green so I called dh and asked him when he was coming home, that's how scared I got. Right now things are calm, I'm having stomach issues from my GERD and can't keep medication down I'm using Zantac 150 but it's not helping, it burns like a fire from my throat all the way to my stomach. I am a mess, and I'm so tired of being sick and TIRED, I want to be well again and feel great again. Is that too much to ask?

Terry

Zantac is a pretty mild GERD drug, maybe you need a different kind, prilosec is a different one, they are totally different classes of drugs. The point of taking the meds is so they help the reflux, if it is not helping you they need to find something that does. I am sorry your throat is feeling affected. Did you explain to the dr it was bothering you that much?

I am totally with you on the sick and tired of being sick and tired!

I found out I was allergic to dog and cat dander 7 years ago but I still had two cats at the time and there was no way I was going to get rid of them. I just make sure I wash my hands after brushing and petting my cats before rubbing my eyes. Plus I get allergy shots and it's just fine. Hi Ann,

That is what Yahoo Groups are for!

(You are so sweet to thank us, though!)

As to your pets, I know, they are part of the family!

I hope you don't even have to come close to giving them up.

I have a feeling we are all sending positive thoughts your way.

Are you taking Tilade or Intal?

If not, they could be the solution to your problem.

Hi Autumn,

I had a similar situation -

many years ago I had 2 dogs and a cat when I was diagnosed with

asthma -

giving them up would have killed me.

What I don't understand to this day is, if I went to someone's house

who had pets, I would be at death's door by the time I got home.

Then it would take a couple days to get back to " normal " .

I've had no exposure to animals really, so I don't know how I'd react... which is hard as I'm supervising Duke of Edinburgh expeditions next weekend, staying in a friend's caravan, and she has a dog. The dog does go in the caravan. She has said she'd give the caravan a good clean first, but still... oh well, only one way to find out!

Sue, I know exactly how you feel I am going in soon to have allergy

testing done. But i noticed about 1 year ago that dogs and cats act

up my allergies so i know i will come back positive for that. And i

have 4 dogs. Other dogs cats that i am not use to are worse for me.

My dogs only seem to bother me when i am grooming them. So i just try

to stay away and make my mom do the grooming. But i would never give

them up they are my kids, Just know that you are not the only one and

i commend you for being strong and keeping your cats.

I had 3 cats about 15yrs ago, no one or nothing was going to make me get rid of them. I knew already that I was allergic to them. After having them for about 3 or 4 yrs it started to catch up to my health. I was getting asthma attacks more frequently til one morning I got up and nothing was working. I ended up in the hospital with border line pnemonia and was there for 5 days. I ended up giving away the cats, which I cried alot. But my health improved after getting over 10 yrs of allergy shots every week in both arms, plus taking zyrtec D twice a day. This past summer I was re-tested for cats and dogs and found out that I wasn't allergic to them anymore. My results came back 0 for cats and dogs. I was very happy. We now have a dog, who is not aloud on the furniture or upstairs, mostly because I don't

want dog hair every where. And I am doing fine. Everyone is different. But please becareful with your health. Just my input. Genevive Ok hold the phone please, you can be allergic to cats and

I've heard before that many people react less to their own pets,

which they've gotten used to, while still reacting badly to other

cats or dogs.

My daughter has terrible asthma attacks when she visits other houses

with dogs, sometimes ending up at the hospital, even though she's

fine at home, where we have a dog of our own.

Either she's used to our dog, or our dog's frequent baths are really

working for us.
