Annie,

Welcome to the group. I have the same thing, feel like I am getting alzheimers at a young age with my memory

being so bad.

Nice to meet you I need to get the girls to bed now.

-----Original Message-----From: Annie Sent: Tuesday, March 04, 2003 7:10 PMTo: Thyroiditis Subject: Hi! I'm newI was diagnosed with Hashimoto's last summer and my doctor still isn't treating me. He wants to have me take blood tests every so often so he can monitor whatever it is that he thinks he needs to look at. I'm extremely frustrated with him because I can't stand living with the symptoms. My memory is horrible and my thinking is "off" too, I'm always cold (I actually have a portable heater blowing on me as I'm sitting here), and I get so tired it's hard to get out of bed among other things. Is this standard for them to monitor you before they treat you or is he completely nuts?

Sounds like it's time to light a fire under him or to fire him! You should

be getting treatment. Good luck.

Hi Annie - welcome to the group but am so sorry you've got the reason

to be here.

Don't we all sound like a broken record? We all have these symptoms

and have to fight to get these doctors to treat us. Annie you need to

tell your doctor it's time to start treating your symptoms and not

your lab values and if he doesn't want to do it, you'll find someone

who will, period, end of story! Be prepared though, he might just

tell you to go find someone else but at least it will get the ball

rolling in one direction or another and you'll have told him where you

stand...you go girl!! :o)

Get yourself prepared before your next visit and print out a copy of

the new guidelines regarding your TSH level. They're dropping the

" normal " range, finally, I might add, and are stating that anything

above 2 means you're in the hypothyroid category. They've finally

figured it out that " normal " people feel better with a TSH around 2,

sure took them long enough!

An update on me, I'm still taking the levoxyl even though my endo told

me to stop it all together. I think it's been about 3 or 4 weeks now

but I've been taking only half the dosage so am getting .025 mcgs and

I can feel the difference...back to being tired and no energy but not

as bad as I was not taking any thyroid med.

I was supposed to go get the EKG to check on the low blood pressure

and slow heart rate and was going to ask my primary to take over

treating my thyroid problem but they asked me to reschedule the appt.

and I couldn't go when they wanted me to so I still need to do that

sometime soon before I run out of levoxly completely. Besides that I

wanted to hear her reaction to the endo's request of having a

gallbladder ultrasound for which nobody can seem to understand why!

Y'all take care, gotta finish getting ready for work...another day,

another dime :o)

Debbie

P.S. Doing ok after having the cervical LEEP done and just went

Monday for the annual boob smashing event...hope that's another thing

that won't end up with a follow-up from questionable results!

hi Debbie!

Thank you! Your post was so helpful! I'm incredibly uninformed so

that was some great information for me. I'm going to call my doctor

tomorrow!

Does Hashimoto's affect your heart? I don't mean to be nosey, but

why did your endocrinologist tell you stop your medication? I hope

all goes well with you.

Annie you're welcome, glad I can help. Hashimoto's does effect your

blood pressure, from what I've read. My bp used to always, always be

120/80 and it has dropped down to the 90/60's now. I don't think that

damages anything, not sure about that but I do know that when you're

hyperthyroid you can have heart palpitations, I've had those on and

off for years and probably due to going back and forth between being

hypo and hyper.

He told me to stop taking the levoxyl because of my last TSH..again,

treating the lab and not me. My TSH was at .15, I think, and said

that's too low. I said well I've been told that Hashi's will make

your TSH fluctuate so much so often that a TSH isn't the best way to

determine what kind or dosage of thyroid hormone you should take....he

didn't have a response to that but I had been told that by a rheumo

I'd seen a few years ago that first dx'd me with Hashi's. He also

told me that with Hashi's, I could go have blood drawn in the morning

and have the TSH come back in the normal range, go again in the

afternoon, and it could come back way out of whack so that is why he

didn't run labs on me all the time but he didn't give me any thyroid

meds either. He gave me a med called Plaquenil, it's a derivative of

a drug they used to use to treat malaria and now use it sometimes to

treat auto-immune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. It comes with

alot of risks and side effects, one risk being a small one but

nonetheless big risk of cornea damage and I had to have my corneas

measured and checked before I started taking the med. I suffered for

weeks from the side effects of the drug and after taking it for about

3 or 4 months, told him I'm not feeling any better, in fact feel worse

and I stopped taking it and pretty much stopped seeing him too because

he was also treating me for fibromyalgia and wanted to refer me to a

pain specialist and go have a sleep study done. He was just afraid to

write me scripts for pain meds since this was during the time doctors

down here in Florida were being raided by the DEA for writing scripts

of oxycontin to patients and a couple of kids died after abusing

oxycontin by smashing it and injecting it along with other drugs to

get high.

Anyways, best advice, read, read, and read as much as you can online

about Hashi's so your next appointment you'll be ready to battle! :o)

Debbie

P.S. Never be afraid to ask any type of question to us here,

and it's not being nosey, it's fine, ask whatever you want...that's

what we're here for is to help inform and support each other!

Hi, Annie -- welcome to the group! I have had heart problems (just

palpitations now) even though I've been mostly hypo. If you're feeling

that cold, you are most probably hypo and need treatment. Do find a

doc who will listen! And keep us posted!
