Guest guest
My brother and sister-in-law had to get a lawyer to get the school to quit bugging them about trying to reduce services for my 10 y.o. nephew. He's integrated with a 1-on-1 para(professional), and reasonable accomodations. They had had my cousin who teaches special ed attend the IEP with them several times, too. Lucky for them, one or several of the bigwigs got some time with my nephew on a day when he had " meltdown " . This past year for the first time they did not try to reduce services! He's extremely intelligent, but definitely autistic. I also think many have a real difficult time understanding that some w/ASD do not have MR. -------------------------------------------------------------- Hey there everyone, Sorry to cross post. It is the heat of IEP season here in Nashville, as it is probably elsewhere too. I am gearing up for World War III this year. We do ABA, and have for four years. The district has, after much fighting , been paying for a portion of it all of these years. As instructed by our ABA company, the aide at our son's school has always been ABA trained and a member of the home team. And as usual, each year, the district always tr ies to not let us use " our " aide, and instead use a part time/as needed spe cial ed assistant from the district. As you can well imagine, I am absolut ely not going to agree to this. Well, it is the last 6 weeks of school down here, and it it is only now tha t the district personnel have been showing up to observe, request data from home, request data from the ABA company, etc. Now, they are requesting pe rmission to go in and video tape my son at school. Let me reinterate, it i s the last month of school. Where have they been for the last 8 months? D on't get me wrong, someone comes every week to " observe " and make notes. B ut now, they are sending someone else, higher up on the totem pole, to make all of the last minute demands. To me, it seems, that an end of the school year video would not be objectiv e or reflective of the whole years work. If they were trying to be fair, t hey should have been making video each week or month all along the year. A m I off base here? Am I just being uncooperative? I tend to be a hot head , so someone share some insight here. Trina *** [This message has been truncated.]
Guest guest
Yes Andy! This is exactly what I'm facing with my 8yo son who was just dx with ADHD and Central Auditory Processing Disorder! His neuro-psych testing showed PERFECT scores on three of the sub-tests...but then any subtest requiring good auditory processing skills were average. (Remember...he had swimmer's ear and got 75 mcg of mercury through the Neomycin ear drops back in Sept!) This lowered his overall IQ to the high-average range. I have an 19 yo who tested with an IQ at 140...WITH ADD (and they said he didn't qualify for any special services at all and they refused to tailor his assignments to match his IQ...so he graduated by the skin of his teeth!) I tried to explain to the school that my 8yo had all the same metals showing up as my autistic son...just in lower amounts than him (still above the reference range) and they looked at me like I was an alien. So he doesn't qualify for the gifted programs and is WAY too smart for their resource/sped classes! The disabilty has cancelled out his giftedness and vice versa! I tell you ... my IEP meetings are getting BRUTAL! And the district is started to HATE me (as usual!)
Guest guest
> I also think many have a real difficult time understanding that > some w/ASD do not have MR. This is clearly an institutional problem. There really are no programs in any public schools I am aware of for children of normal or superior intelligence who have developmental or learning disabilities. Clearly these are the children who would most benefit from such programs, and whose improvement would most benefit society by allowing them to contribute. I suspect the problem is the old toxin, lead, did cause intellectual deterioration. The new toxins (antimony, arsenic, mercury) do not. As always, the public instutions are a few generations behind. Guest guest
The other day my television news claimed that fetal alcohol poisoning is now the leading cause of mental retardation. I think they meant to say " in today's generation " because I was always under the impression that lead poisoning is the leading cause of mental retardation. I think my daughter was mentally retarded and also autistic before we got the lead out of her brain. She rendered a 6.2 on a hair analysis. She was totally oblivious to our presence in the beginning when she was diagnosed at 2 years old. The doctor also said she had " organic brain disorder " and I have never heard or been able to find anything about OBD. It might not exist and it was another way of him saying he couldn't find anything wrong to account for her condition. I was wondering ... if the person taking an x-ray stands with shielding and they place shielding on your chest to protect you during an x-ray, isn't there still a danger of lead going to your brain?
