Your Grains must be trying to grow into a larger colony. If they tasted/smelled funny, then we would have another thing, but if your beverage tastes the same, I would not worry about it.

I have seen/heard things about Kefir Grains that defy anything I've ever read about them. There are numerous varieties too, so they won't all act alike.

Strange Mutant Kefir??

I have had a strange development with my kefir grains. I've been making kefir for about 7 months and loving it. However, within the last 2 or 3 weeks I noticed a strange change in my grains. They are not like grains at all. They are like little flat sheets that curl all up. Some have become long, almost like pasta! They are not as firm as the original grains either (only slightly softer). They are definitely not curds as I've thoroughly checked them out. They taste like the original grains and are the same color. Is this normal, or should I pitch them and start over? Has anyone else ever experienced this??Barbara

I've had the same thing happen in the last couple weeks. I have good

grains, straight from Dom. And I've heard of others who have had the same

thing happen. I think it is just a variation. The kefir is the same as

before. But the grains have been growing rather faster than before, so

they must be happy.

I'd say no problem.

Between us, we could do some serious data collection that would just blow people away.....

We could actually build a database and store the results for survey on the website.

THe important thing would be to define a consistent set of criteria we want to measure and ask for at least that information.
