Subject: Down Melody Lane

MGIMS students, interns, residents, lab technicians, healthcare workers,

teachers- yesterday night they all teamed seamlessly to deliver more than

the musical night had promised- entertaining and enthralling the audience

with super-hit Hindi filmy sangeet. Little wonder that they kept the

audience- all ears to the musical melodies- spellbound for full three hours.

So, when Dr Poonam Verma (1982)and Shivkumar kept on asking the audience

where had the slippery heart gone (Jane kahan mera jigar gaya ji), the

audience gave the pair a thundering applause. So did the audience do when

another pair complained of a stolen heart (Chura liya hai tume Jo dil ko).

Eyes figured in several songs- the Madhuri Dixit number (aankhiya milaun,

aankhiya churau and kajrare kajrare) evoked an incessant clapping. The RK

Gupta couple regaled the audience with legendary HemantKumar's voice (Yaad

kiya dil ne kahan ho tum) and brought memories of Patita- the 1958 movie.

Akash Bang (1994)sang half a dozen songs- his duet with Pooja Bang (O

haseena julfon waali) evoked " once more " from the audience.

Over those three hours one could experience an amalgamation of folk music,

modern and classical elements and hybrid music. The MGIMS members showed

that every human being is born with a gift- they showcased their musical

talent and reigned supreme on the stage. They were wonderful, vivacious, and

versatile- and gave the MGIMS audience a real musical treat! They brought

back memories of such movies as Dharmatma, Mr. and Mrs. 55, Satte pe satta,

Naya Daur, Yaadon ki baarat, and Tisri Manzil). And they made the audience

tap their feet to the numbers from Billu Barber ( marjani marjani) and the

current popular one( Dhinka Chika)! The Naya Daur number ( Ude jab jab

julfein teri) - rendered so well by Surekha Tayade made the old timers walk

down the memory lane- nearly five decades back! And how well did our

students, interns and residents sang!

The Hindi film song has held millions spellbound for nearly eight decades.

The awkwardness of puppy love, the friskiness of teen romance, the

philosophy of unrequited love and the anguish of heartbreak - the MGIMS

singers explored every crevice of ardour. It wasn't just love: the doctor

couples also captured the essence of life - the case of a missing heart, the

story of a stolen heart, the beauty of black eyes, a failed poet's

melancholy, a fiery unionist's vim, really a medley of melody!

But the man who really stole the show last evening was our neurosurgeon- Dr.

S. Ashokkumar. On Tuesday evening he made MGIMS singers delve deep into the

treasure trove and pick up -and sing- all time hit songs to an appreciative

audience. He showed us how with the pairing comes the vibe, with the vibe

comes the tune, and with the tune come word which brings music to the ears.

We also discovered that behind those piercing and probing eyes, sharp tongue

and an innate ability to call a spade a spade, he also possesses a tender

heart and a sensitive brain. And when such astrocytes join hands with

myosites, they generate a melody-filled evening that indeed took off the

dull and drab monotony MGIMS campus is typically associated with!
