The irony of all this is that when missile defense was being developed, the Democrats howled and screamed and passed laws and regulations making it so it could not be used to defend the United States so as not to antagonize the Russians. Only one poorly sited location was finally allowed up in Alaska. The systems mainly were put on Aegis class cruisers.

At the same time, others were saying it was not aimed at the Russians but China and North Korea, etc. But then the brilliant idea came up to put bases in Eastern Europe which to the Russians certainly seemed to be aimed against them even though the official explanation was that it was to defend against Iranian missiles.

This was a stupid move for two other reasons. The Russians have long been paranoid about their western neighbors and wanted lots of buffer space, well, buffers beyond nations they considered their property like the Ukraine and others. Putting the missiles where they are seems to them to be drawing buffer nations into the enemy camp.

The other reason it was stupid is that we are protecting the Continental Europeans. These are the people who, in the main, abrogated their NATO military requirements regarding the size and skill of their armies to defend against the Warsaw Pact forces in favor of more lavish welfare systems. Not only was the US forced to make up the difference with large forces in Europe and a huge and expensive nuclear arsenal, but many of these nations also railed at US presence in their countries and US domination of world affairs. Well, if they had bothered to live up to their obligations and didn't constantly call on the US to protect them when crises arose or play global cop (often in the former European colonial disaster zones) then that wouldn't have happened.

Its just really ironic that we are risking war in a way that most Americans don't begin to realize for a few missile bases to defend ungrateful people desperately letting the Germans set up a new European dictatorship via the unelected EU governing bureaucracy. I mean its not like the Russians don't have legions of skilled hacked who could collapse the power grid and banks or ballistic missiles hidden in cargo containers that can be launched from any ship or truck trailer it happens to be mounted on.

I actually think the Russians might come through on their threat. in which case,

we would say it " proved the point " and respond accordingly.

Hey, it IS 2012, right?

But I think they are trying to make this the reverse of the Cuban missile

crisis. Oddly, no real words of response from the Obama administration, whereas

Kennedy had my dad involved in an airlift to invade Cuba which got turned around

at the last minute.
