So true, Bharat. It has happened with me too in the mirror. There are a

number of times I have had introspective thoughts and many a time

retrospective ones and funniest is the fact that I have never thought about

the future when looking at me in the mirror.

I have usually been very critical of myself in the mirror. I don't know

about others but everyone's input will surely be interesting ;-)

my mind. He asked me softly, “Has your wife stopped loving you because you

are partially bald?” I told him she still loves me very much. (She actually

said so when I called her a half hour ago.) He asked me if anything else has

changed in my life because of my disappearing hair. I knew what he meant

because no causal relationship has ever been established between baldness

and any cataclysmic event in the world. He sounded very

ALTER EGO

I was shaving standing in front of the mirror. I used the shaving brush in slow

lazy strokes as I was more intent on looking at the mirror. Somebody was looking

back at me affably. I realized it was me. Rather it was the ‘other me’. Our eyes

were locked in a mutual stare. The stand-off ended when his eyes softened. Then

I saw a hint of mischief in his eyes. I smiled. He also smiled. It was funny.

I had never scrutinized myself so closely. I had a good look at myself and noted

with satisfaction that I am still in a reasonably good shape. He was watching me

approvingly all the while. I traced the wrinkles across my face. I kept thinking

about all the anti-ageing creams my wife cajoles me into using. The loss of hair

definitely disappointed me. This disappointment was mirrored in his eyes too. I

quickly ran through the list of famous men who have successfully regained their

hair. I suddenly felt that he was reading my mind. He asked me softly, “Has your

wife stopped loving you because you are partially bald?” I told him she still

loves me very much. (She actually said so when I called her a half hour ago.) He

asked me if anything else has changed in my life because of my disappearing

hair. I knew what he meant because no causal relationship has ever been

established between baldness and any cataclysmic event in the world. He sounded

very

thoughtful. I had rarely been treated with so much empathy.

I knew he was ‘me’. He looked like me. He even had the same expressions on his

face. More importantly, he had the same degree of baldness. I told myself he

must be my alter ego. Yet something bothered me. There was a difference which

set us apart. I looked at him again. Yes, there was a difference indeed. I was

holding the shaving brush in my right hand, he in his left. And, we both roared

with laughter.

Later, when I thought about this encounter with myself, I laughed again.

However, he was not there to laugh with me this time.
