Guest guest
Another way to encourage Moms to keep baby's is for that to be the expectation. We give a letter out along with our booklet on delivering at our hospital, it explains rooming in, no nursery and what that means. That way the expectation is there before they come in. Questions can be answered ahead of time and we rarely ave complaints. We also have a greater that 90% initiation breastfeeding rate. All OB staff are required to attend mandatory competencies on breastfeeding and sign a statement supporting our breastfeeding policy. We have three full time LC's and three part time LC's that service difficult inpatient and outpatient breastfeeding problems. We have a community Breastfeeding coalition, an active LaLeche League, and a support group for new breastfeeding Mom's called Small Talk that meets weekly. We have recently implemented a new program where an experienced breastfeeding Mom is given training to be a support person one on one to a new breastfeeding Mom and it is a great success. If you truly want to be a breastfeeding friendly, baby friendly hospital, you have to buy into the plan 100% by informing the community. The expectations of the community will change as they learn the pros and rationale for you policies. Jan
