Hi Sally

I was only banded in July. For the first few days the amount I was allowed to drink was rather small (take an hour or two to drink a very small glass) and the only tablets I was taking was digesic for the pain. They were not too big and I got them down ok. The multivitamins etc were all in powder and made to a drink. I struggled to get the amounts of fluids down each day after 7 days when it was a higher quantity. Do you have instructions on how much to drink each day? the info sheets were my bible! It can be an up and down journey - just take it a day at a time!

Hi

I had your problem for 4 days till i made everything REALLY thin almost water like (though it tasted bad). With the pills i didn't take tablets I bought childrens liquid panadol with codine think it was pain stop? The chemist I saw was a bandit so he recommended it to me.

Hope you get over this its a horrible time

Hi EveryoneI was banded on Monday6 days ago. I thought it was easy peasy at first, came out well from the operation, got up and walked around and came home that night. The probs began the next day.I can barely get any liquids down.I took some pills that night and got a painful vomiting blockage!Since then am terrified to drink anything but can't anyway.I am struggling to get down about 600mls a day - one protein drink and a small glass of juice. Each day the pill thing is a problem again so have started crushing them and taking them hours apart.I get the feeling that most people here have had their surgeries done a long time ago.Can anyone think back as to what it was like for you in this first week and see if it is the same?I rang the dr and he is away but his nurse said that it is normal swelling and will take a week to settle.I had visions of drinking all manner of things in these days but that is not the case.Do you think this is normal?CheersSally

Hi Fred

I have been done for 2 years. I would get it checked out soon. You do not want to get de-hydrated. When I was done I remember bringing me my dinner in the hospital after the op, it was a 3 course meal all in Liquid form, I drank all of it.

...........on the other hand, I remember 2 days after my operation being able to drink just half a cup of tea and how astonished I was that I was physically unable to drink more. Remembers the Bandsters motto of “sip, sip, sip” e.g. small quantities of liquid at a time, more often. Sally as Mel said we don't want to scare you but you should contact

hospital or doc asap decause you are not getting enough fluids into you

and with this extreme heat you run the risk of dehydrating quickly. In

the first couple of weeks it is more about healing than anything else.

Please let us know how you are getting on.

No matter what stage you are at it is not good for your band to be vomiting.

Hi Sally,

I have been banded for abot 4 years, i still have trouble with my tables, some have to be broken in 2 or 4 to swallow and I can only do one at a time, mostly later in the day not when i have first woken up.

Have had xrays and been told that i have a perfect band.

Sally,I am just over 2 months post op now (8 sept). I was on liquids, both thick & thin...ie runny yoghurt & broth from day 1 and then mushies from day 3. I didn't ever have trouble getting anything down although with only sipping slowly in the beginning I never seemed to get the required amount of liquid in. I crushed or split tablets for the first 2 weeks. Now...I don't have any problem taking tablets whole or eating any type of foods as long as it's chewed well. The surgeon tells me I have a large band so that could have something to do with it. It will get much easier in time but meanwhile give your surgeons office a call & let them know what is happening with you...that's what they're there for...to help you through this. If there is anything I can help with, please don't hesitate to

Hi Everyone

I was banded on Monday6 days ago.

I thought it was easy peasy at first, came out well from the operation, got up and walked around and came home that night.

The probs began the next day.

I can barely get any liquids down.

I took some pills that night and got a painful vomiting blockage!

Since then am terrified to drink anything but can't anyway.

I am struggling to get down about 600mls a day - one protein drink and a small glass of juice.

Each day the pill thing is a problem again so have started crushing them and taking them hours apart.

I get the feeling that most people here have had their surgeries done a long time ago.

Can anyone think back as to what it was like for you in this first week and see if it is the same?

I rang the dr and he is away but his nurse said that it is normal swelling and will take a week to settle.

I had visions of drinking all manner of things in these days but that is not the case.

Do you think this is normal?

Cheers

Sally

Hi Sally

In the first few days you shouldn't expect to drink much or quickly.

I had a water bottle with me all the time with a pop top lid with a Berocca dissolved in it and would be constantly sipping mouthfuls at a time. I would then try to make sure i had a "balanced" intake thru out the day: some drinking yoghurt, thin soup, optifast/shakes (usu only half a sachet). I would make 1/2 cup of liquid as a meal and sip at that or use a teaspoon.

When I went home the day after surgery i felt horrrible ( I don't think general anaesthetic agrees with me). It was a hot November day and I felt like I'd been run over by a truck. I was thinking what have I done! Getting up out of a chair was an effort and sleeping was difficult. But i made sure I had soluble codeine and paracetamol and took them as often as allowed. I am used to always doing things at home and it was difficult to just sit still.

I was operated on the Friday and went back to work on the Tuesday, though I felt terrible and really shouldn't have been there.

But after 1 week I already felt so much better.

Fortunately I didn't have to take any medication. But if it's not available in soluble form, crush it. If a certain medication is not suitable to be crushed your doctor should give you another that is.

My surgeon (Dr Doug Nicholson in Brisbane) is very conservative withh the post op phase. i was on liquids thin then thick for ages. From what I've read some surgeons get people onto mushies pretty quickly. But you will know what you can handle: if thick soup is uncomfortable then wait.

If the swelling is causing problems, sip on ice cubes or even iceblocks. Don't worry about calories at this stage. The most important thing is get plenty of liquid into you so just sip all day.

Good luck.... just take things slowly and listen to your band..you will start to get a sense what it can tolerate and when. Take a small sip and wait for it to go down. Don't rush it.

I'm sure by the time you read this you will already be much better. Just picture the new you in a few months/years and you will get through this.

keep in touch.
