I was in Gage Hall my first year and it was still fairly new. There were only four or five dorms there on the quad then. I went back a few years ago and it was so crowded! The science building was so new you had to walk over plywood to get inside! Of course that was a time of sex, drugs and rock and roll, but I was so busy commuting to Cornell to see my boyfriend there that I missed all that. I remember fondly the night of the blackout when we spent the night drinking beer downtown. My " big brother " was always at the spearhead of any protest march....fun times, very different from today. Good memories.........

This conversation interests me because AWHONN in the last year or two had quite a lengthy statement of the use of non-licensed personnel in the OB hospital environment. Of course, I cant give you ALL the details, you can probably get it off the web site or by phone/fax, but it pretty much said a lot about the limits of the nurse tech/nurses aide etc. I remember us having to change our job descriptions of our " unit assistants " to no longer include any thing that even resembled an " assessment " . Another person talked about nurses aides helping with breastfeeding....that would NEVER fly in our dept. Nurses aides can clean up, pass trays, stock, etc. But non-licensed personnel do not do any " assessing " , they can do baths, get a set of vitals, help people up to the bathroom all under direct supervision/delegation of the assigned RN... and thats about all the pt care they do. Check the AWHONN statement.... it also talked about nurse patient ratios and staffing. There was strong wording about using non licensed personnel as part of an assignment. If I recall, it said that if you normally staffed one nurse to 4 couplets, but decided to staff one nurse to 6 couplets and give her an aide, that was not acceptable. Staffing shouldnt " change " because of non-licensed personnel. That could throw a big curve in a lot of units! Of course, AWHONN simply makes " guidelines " for staffing, (notice how they've moved away from " standards " and into " guidelines " ?) but we pretty much follow their guideline where I work. It's all quite interesting.... BTW, most of our dept unit assistants are actually LPN's. We have an " all RN " unit, but did not want to loose our LPN's that didnt choose to go back to school years ago, so we created this position for them. It was a tragedy if you ask me...lots of knowledge and years birthing babies, now doing " tech " work. Jan Jan
