Some South Dakota Schools Cut Costs By Cutting a Day

By: Nick Carbone

Topics: education, four day week, High School, school, South Dakota

It'll be a three-day weekend every weekend for many students across the Mount

Rushmore state.

As schools start to return to session in South Dakota, more than one-fourth of

students in the state will only be in class from Monday through Thursday.

Budget constraints have led the Irene-Wakonda school district, for one, to hack

off a day from the school week. Larry ke, superintendant of the district in

southeastern South Dakota, says the change will save his schools more than

$50,000 per year. In order to make up for the missing day, the school will add

30 minutes to each of the other four days and shorten the daily lunch break.

I think you're right. Kids can't sit still all that long. Cutting recess and shortening lunch will just make them wilder in class. They'll also resent the longer day.

I was thinking about how now the parents will have to worry about looking after the kids on those days when they aren't home and what trouble they'll get in instead of studying.

It will be instantaneous. What parents who cared about their kids' educations would allow a school district to shorten how many days a week they spend in school? Can kids endure the lengthier school days and shorter lunch breaks? I doubt it.So if parents are allowing this to proceed, chances are they could care less about how well their kids are educated.Administrator
