Guest guest
Andy, I live in ND- and our 3 year old has these metals in him- Arsenic, Cadmium, Lead, Mercury, Nickel, and Tin Here is the catch, there are no Doctor's here that will help with either conventional chelating or supplemental. HELP! I did talk to a doctor today that luckily is on a hour and a half away that has agreed to help us. Unfortunatley, he says he has never chelated a person so small and is not sure what the proper way to do it is. He said that he would talk to some colleges and do a referral if needed. COuld you help with me- with what you consider proper protocol He is three years old 53 pounds and approximately 45 inches tall ( if not taller) Thank you Barb Roth
Guest guest
Barb, I wondered how you found out that your 3 yr old has those metals. Did you do a certain test? Who did it? I am considering chelation for my 7 yr old son. Guest guest
Hi Barb, I don't know if you are aware that the Autism Research Institute will be issuing its consensus report on the detoxification of autistic children very soon. Their website is at www.autism.com/ari and below is a brief quote taken out of their Press Release dated February 12, 2001: " Detoxification is not simple and there are many competing detoxification protocols...In response to this situation, the Autism Research Institute convened a Consensus Conference on the Detoxification of Autistic Children in Dallas, Texas, February 9th through 11th, 2001. The attendees were 25 carefully selected physicians and scientists knowledgeable about mercury and mercury detoxification. The 15 physicians present included 7 who were parents of autistic children and who had detoxified their own children with excellent results. The physician attendees present had treated well over 3,000 patients for heavy metal poisoning, about 1,500 of them being autistic children. The chemists, toxicologists, and other scientists present had a combined total of almost 90 years of experience in studying the toxicology of mercury. " " The purpose of the meeting was to arrive at a consensus document which would delineate the safest and most effective methods of detoxifying autistic children. Nine candidate detoxification protocols, including 5 submitted by non-attendees, were considered in detail by the conferees. " " The Autism Research Institute will issue its consensus report on the detoxification of autistic children at the earliest possible date-- most likely in mid-March--after the participants have had an opportunity to review and approve the document. " As you see, you and your doctor can have the benefit of the consensus protocol to guide you through chelation very shortly. Check the ARI website above and I believe that if you register your e-mail address with them, they will automatically notify you when the protocol is published. Best of luck to you and your family. Sincerely, Mireille > I live in ND- and our 3 year old has these metals in him- > Arsenic, Cadmium, Lead, Mercury, Nickel, and Tin > > Here is the catch, there are no Doctor's here that will help > with either conventional chelating or supplemental. Just find a lab that will do Heavy Metal Toxicty Screening (hair or urine is best) Good luck to you...... barb

Guest guest
Dear Moira, Thanks for your reply. I HAD gotten some useful posts via backchannel, so I'd left it there so as not to clog the list. But thanks, anyway, Barbara > I didn't see your post get answered so far. > I'm pasting an email from Andy (below my name) which answers > your question in detail. Guest guest
Dear Barb, I didn't see your post get answered so far. I'm pasting an email from Andy (below my name) which answers your question in detail. (I saved it because it seemed to really cover a lot of the details.) and Good luck! Moria Message: 11 Date: Tue, 26 Dec 2000 18:42:30 -0000 From: " Cutler " <AndyCutler@...> Subject: Re: TO ANDY CUTLER-WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE CORRECT CHELATION PROTOCOL? The correct chelation protocol is alpha lipoic acid (ALA) every 3 hours 'round the clock (If you have trouble getting up at night to administer it then doing it every 4 hours at night only does seem to be OK as long as you stick to every 3 during the day). DMSA may also be administered with the ALA and seems to increase its effectiveness and reduce behavioral side effects. You do this for several days in a row, typically 3 or 4, then wait at least as many days before repeating it again. You get to repeat it many times before the kid is well, though you should see progress after a few cycles. Children under 8 make the most noticeable progress. A typical schedule would be to start at 9 AM one day, dose at noon, 3 PM, 6, 9, then 1 AM and 5 AM and 9 AM and continue on this schedule until the 9 PM dose on the third day, then stop. If you miss a dose and it is more than 4 and a half hours after the last dose, stop that chelation cycle, wait several days, and re-start. The harm comes from giving a series of doses that are more than 3 or 4 hours apart, but not all that much more. Unfortunately, the every 8 hour protocol is about optimum for making people really sick. I realize that is not at all its intent, but the chemicals (DMSA and ALA) you are feeding your kids are stupid - they do whatever they are going to do once they get into your kid's bloodstream regardless of what you or your doctor intended for them to do. You can lecture the little pills all you want and it doesn't change their behavior ;-) Some people find that if they are using DMSA with the ALA, and omit the ALA from the last dose the day after side effects of generally feeling icky and being in a bad mood are reduced. The day after effect lessens as chelation progresses. Dosage is individual, and is determined by side effects. The ALA dose is varied a lot to find one that is OK. The DMSA seems to have less side effects on its own - probably because it isn't actually moving mercury around in the brain. Typical starting doses are 1-2 mg DMSA per kg of kid, and the same for the ALA. If the side effects are too much, halve the dose and try again. It is preferable to use roughly equal amounts of ALA and DMSA, though they can be in a 1:2 or 2:1 ratio and things will work fine. It is important to get an accurate diagnosis (as opposed to the opinion of some highly opinionated alternative medicine doctor) about which metal is causing the problem since different metals respond to different chelation regimes - I gave the one for mercury. You should administer certain supplements all the time, regardless of whether you are chelating your child or not. There is no chemical reason to vary supplements depending on chelation. It is too complicated to do so and you need to make things simple. The most basic supplements are antioxidants: vitamins C, B complex, E, mixed carotenes, magnesium, zinc and selenium as selenomethionine. It is very important to give the B complex and C 4 times a day as they do NOT last very long in the body. It is also helpful for most children to give them a few tablespoonsful of flax seed oil each day. Sulfury supplements should not be randomly admnistered. First figure out if your child will respond well or poorly to them, then decide on things like NAC. You can figure this out with a plasma cysteine test through Great Smokies lab (part of the comprehensive liver detoxification profile) or by experiment. Note that there is another compound called cystine which is NOT what you want to measure. If you do it by experiment it takes about a week of " sulfur exclusion " followed by reintroducing it to tell what is happening. This and much more is covered in my book AMALGAM ILLNESS: DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT which is described in more detail at http://hometown.aol.com/noamalgam.
