Swine Flu Outbreak in Nicaragua

The incidences of Swine flu in Nicaragua is being continuously monitored because

of the danger of outbreak which could be health alarming for most of the

population in the said locality. It was noted that in Nicaragua, there were

about thirty-two (32) people being infected by the disease H1N1 swine flu for

the past week according to the health ministry.

Swine flu is a respiratory disease caused by H1N1 virus that infect the

respiratory tract of pigs and result in nasal secretions, a bark-like cough,

decreased appetite, and listless behavior. Transmission of the virus from pigs

to humans is not common and does not always lead to human flu, often resulting

only in the production of antibodies in the blood. People with regular exposure

to pigs are at increased risk of swine flu infection.

It can be remembered that back in 2009, H1N1 (sometimes called " swine flu " ) is a

new influenza virus causing illness in people. This new virus was first detected

in people in the United States in April 2009. This virus is spreading from

person-to-person worldwide, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal

influenza viruses spread. On June 11, 2009, the (WHO) declared that a pandemic

of 2009 H1N1 flu was underway.

According to the Public Health spokesman, Saez, that almost all of the

diagnosed patients with swine flu are already in good and stable condition.

Other patients have been discharged in some public hospitals.

" People should not be alarmed, because the health ministry has taken appropriate

measures " to control the virus, Saez said.

It was also noted that the concentration of most diagnosed cases of swine flu

were in the capital Managua and the adjacent Leon department.

In year 2009, swine flu was declared as a epidemic in Mexico, which means that

there is rapid and widespread increase in the number of cases, affecting many

individuals at the same time. However, on the eleventh day of June 2009, World

Health Organization (WHO) officials declared that H1N1 Swine Flu is already a

flu pandemic which was the first flu pandemic for the past 41 years, and it

reached the level six (6) criteria of the WHO which alarms the whole globe.

During the globe outbreak in year 2009, Nicaragua reported about 11 deaths, from

a number of 2,300 infections noted in that same year.

Symptoms of the disease usually are similar to most influenza infections, these

include: fever of about 100 degrees Fahrenheit, cough, fatigue, head ache, and

nasal secretions. It may also include nausea, and vomiting.

Swine flu is diagnosed by the patient's history of association with people known

to have the disease and their symptoms listed above. Usually, a quick test known

as the nasopharyngeal swab sample is done to see if the patient is infected with

influenza A or B virus.

The treatment of the disease includes two antiviral agents which have been

reported to help prevent or reduce the effects of swine flu are zanamivir

(Relenza) and oseltamivir (Tamiflu).
