A few years ago an ENT wanted to take my daughter's tonsils out, too. In fact, when she was 3 another ENT determined that her adenoids were way swollen and removed them when he was in there placing ear tubes (after repeated ear infections). Dietary intervention (removing dairy and wheat) has helped her sleep and breath a great deal better.

- [ ] Huge tonsils

My 2.11 y.o.'s tonsils are huge right now (they touch each other). He had a similar episode 5 -6 weeks ago. It causes snoring & he stops breathing until he gets his position changed, etc.

He was on steroids & antibiotics before (the steroids cleared up the sleep problems in 1 -2 nites). But I don't want to do this (steroids & antibiotics) often. I'm not too crazy about removing his tonsils, either.

Any suggestions? We have to sit up with him all night when he's like this, to help him reposition constantly, so it's really bothersome. Please help, I need some sleep.

,

My 4 1/2 year old son with PDD-NOS recently had his tonsils and adenoids

removed due to sleep apnea and huge tonsils. My son now breaths through his

nose, does not snore and has no trouble sleeping. His adenoids were

completely blocking his ability to breath through his nose and his tonsils

were " kissing " when they did surgery. I would highly recommend getting an

evaluation by an ENT surgeon. I didn't realize that sleep apnea can effect

attention and personality. So I am very glad we took the plunge. (by the

way--my son did not improve on a gf/cf diet).

, I hope this helps your child. Fourteen years ago, my non-autistic child was born with a drainage in his nose and throat. He kept that drainage even though it improved with a vaporizer. A lot of mucus came out and then it got better, even though he always had some level of mucus. Around the age of ten, his tonsils were so large they closed in his throat. He had severe trouble breathing, especially at night. He had to sleep with his mouth open to get air. Antibiotics did not help with this problem. I thought he was going to gag many times. He had to really huff to get air. Then, I ran across an old article in a magazine where someone said he took himself off milk and his throat cleared. I tried this on my son--I took him off all milk products and waited. It worked !!! My son's tonsils cleared up, shrank to a normal size, and he was able to breathe again in a normal fashion. He has not had this problem anymore. For my other son who is autistic, taking him off milk has not helped his drainage. However, he can breathe with his mouth closed. Rose

Rose,

Thanks. I think I will take him back off milk. He did great when we did it before.

,

I had tonsilitis (quinsy) every 6 months from age 5 until they removed my

tonsils at age 21. I became a mouth-breather as a result. Gee, I wonder if the

tonsilitis coincided with dental appointments (I recall only one appt. with no

fillings) or vaccines. They put me on antibiotics each time. Unfortunately,. I

didn't go dairy-free until after I had them out, so don't know if that would

have helped or not, but have heard that eliminating dairy often helps those who

have frequent ear infections.

You don't mention if you have begun chelation with your child and if so whether

the enlarged tonsils occurs when " on " or " off " .. If so, you might want to cut

back on the dosage. Tonsils act as first defense for items coming in the mouth

(regardless of the fact that most in traditional mediciane say they have no

purpose). Consider anything entering the ear/nose/throat combo and try to

determine if any changes between when you see this reaction and when you don't.

But, why not find out WHY the tonsils and adenoids are swollen before

removing them?

Thanks for the info. Just today the Doc gave me the go-ahead to see a ENT.

, the way that I think about it is that the big tonsils

indicate that there is something they are " fighting off " or

trying to fight off. So, to my thinking, it is not HARMFUL,

but more like a sign that something else is harmful--- and

this is a reaction to it. Sort of like if you have a bad

bacterial infection you will get a fever. This indicates

that your body is fighting off (or trying to fight off) an

infection.

Tonsils are part of the lymphatic system.

best wishes,

Moria
