Guest guest
Hi, I recently went to my brother's funeral (December) and it was a sort of closure of a very painful existence. However, I had hoped to find some answer to what happened to him, and now I feel like it is too late. He was born a full term 8 lb beautiful boy. It was in an Army hospital in Rhode Island. Soon after, my father went off to sea and left my Mom alone in a strange town, in the dead of winter with her first child. She tried to breast feed only to learn she was given " drying up pills " not knowing what they were. He screamed day and night. Eventually, on the advice of her father, she gave him goat's milk and he had his first normal BM. He did not meet milestones. He cried for hours if startled by a loud noise. He was fascinated by newspaper print. He never developed cognitively beyond 3 months. No one ever offered any explanation. I lived in fear all my life that I would produce a child similar. What could he have gotten at 3 months that would have stopped his development? DPT? I also wondered about inborn errors of metabolism, but I don't know if he was ever tested. My Mom's memory is not the best, and I don't know if I will ever have any answers now. But I wonder, and could it hold the key to my son's issues? Guest guest
Carol, You know it is interesting, I have my son with autism who is eight, but I also have an older son from my first marriage. My older son is now 23 he was a big beautiful baby boy, happy healthy, slept great was gaining weight and progressing wonderfully. He started out as my easy baby, he had a cold and went in for his 6 months DPT. He got very sick, got thrush, got the runs, and started loosing weight quickly. He was diappearing right before my eyes, and I didn't know what to do about it. I have pictures, it is so sad. I had a great pediatric allergist, when I mentioned what happened he quickly did blood work. The doctors office called me and asked me to come in as soon as possible and they gave him a very large vial of gammoglobulin, now I was in my early 20's and never thought to ask why they did that. My son grew up being very different, he was delayed in his speech, he had trouble toilet training, he was emotionally immature, hed problems learning in school, wanted to be alone often, and never quite fit in socially, and life was just harder on him all together, he spoke out commericials at the table in the middle of a normal converstion that we were all having, Now that I look at the whole picture, and when I read about autism, and with all that I know now, I know my first son was damaged also, and this truely broke my heart, he may have been diagnosed with asbergers. This is very possible that your brother was damaged by the immunizations. There is book A SHOT IN THE DARK, your brother story is probably similar to many that are in the book. This must have been so difficult for your family, and so hard for you as you have always grown up with this fear. My older dauthter has always had the same fear, because of both my boys. She is so afraid to have another child, for fear it might be a boy, she says she would not be able to handle it , that she would give it to me for fear it might happen to her son also. She does have a beautiful happy healthy little girl, not immunized and doing wonderful, Praise God. Carol, my heart goes out to you and your family this must have been a painful thing in your life, how old was you brother?
